I have been running a POS backoffice systme for 18months and it has been unable to open the database three times in the last tow months or so. The technical guys at the POS company have tried to uninstall and reinstall without success and they have tried all the usual fix scenarios to no avail. They are suggesting i reinstall windows 10 - is there another way? It is definitely a problem on my PC and not twith the POS company files.

Hello and welcome!

Please do the following:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste 4.0.15744.161 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Hi!

First batch:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I don't know if it is relevant but my PC has another strange problem when i turn it on i get a snow screen so i turn it off and on again then it is normal.

at the end of sfc scannow it says it did not find any integrity violations ... is that what you mean?

You are utterly amazing! I am so grateful, i will definitely make a donation to the site, thank you so much!

Well my problem is still not solved - my POS provider has tried to uninstall all SQL files from my computer but is unable to. The POS is the only program that uses this database and he wants to uninstall and then reinstall to see if this fixes the problem.

My POS Tech can access my computer remotely so here is his reply - i am not technically capable of dealing with this!

Microsfot SQL looks to be uninstalled on the system, however when trying to re-install again we recived a SQL Server Setup Failure message 01-11-2019 09-55-41.png

I found a solution regarding that error which was related to UpgradeCodes in the regedit ( to remove a key which included the first part of the GUID in the error message) however after doing this step the installer wouldn't even start ( i restored the key back in regedit afterwards ) I just wanted to confirm that Microsoft SQL was completely uninstalled from the previous instance, so I can try and do a fresh install of it.

I can't get back in touch with my POS guy at the moment, do you think this is something i can do with your guidance?

Well that's a bit difficult to answer but i am willing to give it a go. The POS guy is not really any help anymore because he says it's not his problem.

Okay, please do the following:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.
