Dell Optiplex 745 5GB, 250GB, 3ghz, usb mouse & keyboard, no ps2 ports. Upgraded from Windows 7 to 10.

Windows updates fail. Troubleshooter & Tweaking.com Windows Fix got it to download updates but installation always fails. It takes two days to download on 3mb wireless.

Tried and failed miserably in Windows & Safe Mode, with usb devices removed, drivers shut down and a-v & a-m programs shut down.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Have you tried a Windows 10 repair over the top? Your data and programs will stay intact.

1. Download and run the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from here. Ensure you click on Download tool now.
2. Accept the License Terms.
3. Select "Upgrade this PC now" and click Next.
4. Follow the prompts and allow the upgrade to go through.

Thanks for the reply. All built in repair, recovery & reset options fail.
ISO images made with MCT always fail, setup quits and goes home early.
SFC can not start the repair process. DISM fails with error 193 and can not find source files in the iso.

Please right-click the Start button and select Run. Type msinfo32 in the run dialog and click OK.

When the System Information screen comes up, the 2nd row should be Version. Mine shows 10.0.10586 Build 10586.

What does yours shown?

All attempts at Windows update have failed. Only a few security updates have worked, mainly Windows Defender.

Thanks for the info. Can you expound further the following?

ISO images made with MCT always fail, setup quits and goes home early.

So did you use MCT to save an ISO file of Windows 10 to your desktop, then mount the ISO and attempt the install from the ISO while in Windows?

Yes. I put one on the external HD, which is not accessible now, on on the internal HD, one on a DVD which is not accessible 'cuz the DVDW will not recognize the media and one on a usb stick. None of them could install.

Do you know how long ago you installed Windows 10. Has it been less than 30 days?

Also, please do the following.

Step#1 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Install date was in November, beyond the 30 day limit, before the Nov. update.
Windows Smart Screen prevents that app from running.

No options. Smart Screen options other than total stop did not work. View attachment Addition.txtView attachment FRST.txt

I do not know how the scanner works, and what it does. It appears to want to delete three files, two are obsolete and the third should have been removed by ASC Powerful Uninstall. The Additional report contains information about update failures which i can not interpret.

My system knowledge was limited to a few api calls in MS DOS & Windows XP.

Currently running a scan with Malwarebytes.

Thanks for the info. I notice you are a little low on Disk Space. Ideally you should have at least 15% (33GB) free for your machine to run optimally. More of an FYI.

Please uninstall the following programs. They are either not tested/recommended with Windows 10, have a bad reputation or are unnecessary. If you wish to keep any of them please hold off re-installing them until we get your machine working again.

Advanced SystemCare 9
Download Accelerator Plus (DAP)
Driver Booster 3.3
DriverToolkit version 8.5.0.0
Immunet 3
IObit Malware Fighter 3
IObit Uninstaller
RegInOut System Utilities
Smart Defrag 4
SpeedZooka
Surfing Protection
TopWinPrio

Let me know when complete.

Drivertoolkit & reginout had been removed. I reinstalled them and used IOBit's Powerful Uninstall on them.

ASC9's license expired; I uninstalled it. After uninstalls, before removing ASC, I did a registry scan. At reboot: critical error--Cortana & start menu. Restore point would not work, I had to resort to a registry backup.

Tweaking could not run its pre-repair commands. FixWin proved that SFC & DISM still fail.
The one thing I did not remove is DAP10, I can not do large downloads without it. Chrome & Firefox simply can not handle them. They no longer integrate with DAP, so I hafta get the url from the download page and run it manually.

For Example: I need to get NetFramework 4 in order to run Seagate diagnostics on the Barracudda with an old, undead Dell Dimension running XP.

Using what tool?

I had to resort to a registry backup
So if you restored the registry then your system still thinks all of those programs are installed.

Tweaking could not run its pre-repair commands. FixWin proved that SFC & DISM still fail.
You seem to be running more tools than are requested which is going to make fixing your machine take longer.

So before we continue, what is the status of your machine?

  • Status: deep crap.
  • sfc & dism will not run
  • dap 10 will not run
  • Firefox failed to download Net framework4
  • Start menu is functional again.

Registry scan/repair was done with ASC9 before uninstalling it. Restore from backup was done with tweaking's windows repair. Restore point failed. Tweaking's repairs failed to run in Safe Mode after uninstalls.

Registry cleaners

It's not a good idea to use registry cleaners/boosters. We do not recommend using these. With the amount of these types of tools on your machine I'm really not surprised that there are issues.
The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, (and you are expert in the registry), I would suggest you leave the registry alone. I thought it important for you to understand this if you didn't already.

Repeat the steps in Post#8 so I can have another look.

Reinstalled, ran and removed Immunet: rootkit, flash and full scans 0 threats found.
DAP failed: no formload so I can't do a fresh dnld. Removed it. SFC & DISM still fail.

Unfortunately not all machines can be saved. I think in this case the best way forward is for you to backup your data, locate all your programs that you will need to re-install, get any license key information you need and then do a format/re-install of Windows 10.

There are many tutorials on how to do this (one example is here).
