Toshiba Laptop Screen Issues

Hey all,

One of the laptop's at the office here started flickering today and then began darkening to the point where you could just make out the desktop.

I don't think it's the motherboard as I hooked it up to an external display and it works flawlessly.

So I'm thinking it's either the video cable or the inverter. Is there anyway to determine which one without changing the other?

Question 2, Does anyone have the repair manual for a Toshiba Satellite Pro S300L laptop available?

Thanks,

It's most likely the inverter, if could see the desktop screen clearly on a different display.

My thoughts too.

Anyone have the service manual for this?

I'm fairly confident I can change the inverter without the manual but it's nice to have handy.

Thanks Stephen,

I did track that one down, unfortunately that's the user's manual. I was hoping for the service i.e. tells me how to take it apart.

This could be the inverter, or the CCFL it supports. I would replace both at the same time or you may be tearing the notebook apart again soon.

Note that inverter and CCFL replacement is a common repair task and many repair shops will do this for a flat rate, plus parts. And because these shops do this almost every day (or perhaps several times a day) they have the tools, know-how, and experience. Plus - they are then responsible for any collateral damage - and that is often the key. I know how to fix the brakes on my truck, but I would rather have someone I can sue do them, should something go wrong.

As far as the manual, it will certainly show you specifics if you choose to attempt this yourself. But a quick Bing Google search will show you many tutorials. Replacing the parts is not hard, getting access to them can be tricky.

I've found the parts (haven't purchased them yet as we are looking at the option of just buying a new laptop for the guy) the CCFL is part of the LCD screen on these laptops as I've found out so replacing that is expensive. We are tempted to send it away as the parts are relatively expensive (cable=70+taxes, Inverter=80+taxes, and Screen=180+taxes) So it's an expensive mistake if I change the inverter and it turned out to be the cable, or vice versa, or changed both of those to find out it was the screen all along.

Better off to let them figure out which one it is if we go that route.

And there's no shame in that! If inverter or CCFL replacement were meant to be a "user task", monitor (notebook and desktop) makers would make user access and replacement easier.
