[SOLVED] This VAIO is driving me crazy

I have had an ongoing issue with this new VAIO laptop since purchase six months ago. Essentially what is happening is that the laptop will BSOD while inactive, ie when not in use. Sometime when returning from sleep, sometimes just when the screen is powered off.

I have rebuilt from factory setting 4 times, very carefully updating all drivers from the Sony site. The laptop has also been RMA'd back to Sony. The rebuilds make no difference. I have beaten my head bloody trying to talk to Sony support and have given up with them.

Most often the reported failed driver in Synaptics Touchpad, however I suspect something else as well.

Driver Verifier is on. For some reason the request to create the perfmon /report errored with a lack of permission so that is not in the zip. Also included in the zip is VAIO.HTML which is a HWINFO dump of the system.

Thanks in anticipation,

Tony

Some small progress. I can stop the issue by turning off all power options that allow sleep. Really doesn't solve the problem, but does mean that at least I can use it reliably. Love to know if the dumps point to the offending software.

Hi Tony,

I presume this is a different system than the one I assisted you with prior?

Most if/not all of the crash dumps are of the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) bug check.

This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.

A driver tried to access an address that is pageable (or that is completely invalid) while the IRQL was too high. This bug check is usually caused by drivers that have used improper addresses.

Code:
0: kd> k
Child-SP RetAddr Call Site
ffffd000`22eed288 fffff801`19f69ae9 nt!KeBugCheckEx
ffffd000`22eed290 fffff801`19f6833a nt!KiBugCheckDispatch+0x69
ffffd000`22eed3d0 fffff801`f5304c81 nt!KiPageFault+0x23a
ffffd000`22eed560 00000000`00000000 [COLOR=#ff0000]SynTP+0x3bc81[/COLOR]

SynTP.sys is the Synaptic Touch Pad driver. Check for an update ASAP - Drivers ? Synaptics

If not there, check Sony's site - Sony eSupport - Drivers & Software Updates - Select a Model

Patrick

Patrick,

Yes, ironically I have been plagued with BSOD's at the moment, and it is a different system. I have the current Sony supplied Synaptics driver installed. That was essentially the problem. I am sure it as something to do with power management but I can't identify what. I have scoured the net prior to posting but can't identify anything that is something that hasn't been done already.

Cheers,
Tony

My apologies, I skimmed over that mention in your OP evidently.

I just took another look at your OS version, and here's all I needed to see:

Code:
0: kd> vertarget
[COLOR=#ff0000]Windows 8[/COLOR] Kernel Version 9600 MP (4 procs) Free x64
Product: WinNt, suite: TerminalServer SingleUserTS Personal
Built by: 9600.17041.amd64fre.winblue_gdr.140305-1710

The Synaptics touchpad driver on Windows 8 is nothing less than a headache. Is it possible to uninstall/disable the touchpad driver without losing the functionality of your keyboard as well on the laptop? It's been awhile since I've done so, so I cannot exact remember.

Regards,

Patrick

Patrick,

Don't know. Will set a restore point and see. If it does allow operation of the keyboard, I will then "Allow" sleep again and see what happens.

Cheers,

Tony

An update.

The removal of the Synaptics driver has seen the issues stop. It can sleep and wake without a crash. The touchpad works in a crippled fashion, i.e. a basic mouse type of set of actions.

I will try and install the generic drivers from Synaptics and see if there is a difference between them and the Sony supplied version.

Cheers,

Tony

Great to hear the crashes have ceased, at least we know how the way to go if the others don't seem to work.

Regards,

Patrick

Patrick,

Yes, the cause does seem to be identified. The generic drivers wouldn't load, so I have gone back to the original set that came with the laptop to see if its just the recent upgrade was the cause.

Tony

Patrick,

I think that I can put the issue down to the version 17.0.9.1 drivers that were downloaded by VAIO Update and, like a dutiful user, I applied. I reinstalled the original Win 8 version 16 drivers, reset the power setting on balanced plan to default and waited to see what happened.

Nothing, i.e. no crashes. Floats in an out of sleep like it should.

Problem solved.

Thanks again for all the help.

Tony

Very great to hear, and thanks for the update. It was my pleasure, and thanks for your consistent information.

Regards,

Patrick
