Earlier this week, Microsoft announced the Surface, its bold entry into the tablet market, at an impromptu keynote. The Surface competes against Apple and other tablet makers using Windows 8’s strengths to provide a complete platform. The release of the Surface also marks a pivotal moment for Microsoft: this is the first PC the company has ever built.
The Ars OpenForum did not overlook this interesting fact about Microsoft’s strategy. solomonrex started a thread titled "MS Surface: Microsoft crosses the Rubicon of PC hardware." He said, "I'm guessing this is a major turning point in technology. There was a time when cars were built [with] separate engines and chassis and bodies, rarely integrated, now the situation is reversed, and everything is integrated as much as possible. Now it looks like PCs are evolving in a similar way."
