[SOLVED] The 80073712 error on Win 8.1 prevents me from living a happy life

Well, the error doesn't allow me to update my system. I have tried pretty much everything. SFC doesn't work. Neither did using the DISM with /restorehealth command as it gave me the 14098 error. Then I noticed I don't have the winre.wim. I restored that by using a win 8.1 iso. Since DISM seems to rely on Windows Update which isn't working correctly for me, I tried using it with forced source, that being the aforementioned win 8.1 iso. It didn't work again and produced a 1726 error. I'm pretty much out of options right now.

Also I'm pretty sure I've seen the CBS being mentioned along a word "error" a few times. Here are the links to the COMPONENTS, CBS.log and DISM.log files.

I would really appreciate some help on this.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention, I tried deleting some updates (KB3022345, KB304394, KB2811660) and the KB2919355 wouldn't delete neither via Windows Update nor the cmd.

Hi tomsg1 :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Since the CBS.log is volatile, you need to upload it right after running either SFC or DISM, so let's try this again.

EndqYRa.png
System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Thanks, Aura. I've tried a few things since my first post so I'm also attaching the most recent COMPONENTS file which may or may not have been changed. Also, the CBS.log is zipped because for some reason it's 170mb uncompressed. I hope that's not a problem.

Oh and on another note, the SFC fails at 37%. And the KB2919355 seems to be the most problematic since I can't delete it (and therefore reinstall) in any way. I also tried using MS's troubleshooter as well as their FixIt both of which reported problems, and reported fixing them, though they didn't fix anything really.

I would like to apologize for the delay. Since I don't have Windows 8.1 x64 anymore (I upgraded to Windows 10), I didn't have a way to source your files quickly. I had to prepare them and it was quite a long process, but I'm now ready to face this situation in the future so it should be good. Follow the instructions below please.

Also, for some reason the CBS file is getting bigger and bigger (700mb now). Is there a way to make it smaller?

The CBS file will be automatically archived in a .cab file at a certain size :) Let's run SFCFix to see if I can get a summary of what's in it, since the file is too big to be opened in Notepad++ and I cannot really install and configure vim at work.

SFCFix - Run Only
Follow the instructions below to download and execute SFCFix, and provide the log.
  • Download SFCFix and move the executable on your Desktop;
  • Right-click on SFCFix.exe and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator;
  • Follow the instructions displayed in the console;
  • On completion, a log will open in Notepad. Copy and paste the content of that log in your next reply;
    Note: The log (SFCFix.txt) will be created in the same directory where SFCFix is run if it doesn't open automatically on completion.

Alright, I ran the SFCFix alone and it said it fixed something (component store corruption) and DISM didn't fail this time. However, it also said that not everything was fixed.

Only one file left. I'm not home right now (at work), so I don't have access to my Windows 8.1 x64 VM. I'll source the file tonight.

Follow the instructions below please.

Is there any explanation as to why do new things keep appearing as corrupted?

The first file keeps on showing up as corrupted, but I think I know why. As for the other detections, these are new. I'll source the files once I get home tonight since I don't have my VMs on my work laptop.

Sorry for the delay. I have them. Follow the instructions below please.

Alright, Aura, everything seems to work now. SFC doesn't report any errors. Thank you for the assist.
