Hello,

I keep getting this recurring message Task host window is stopping background tasks error message on shut down windows 8.1 and it doesn't matter if I click on shut down anyway, it does not shutdown. I have to hold down the power button to shut down and some of the time (not always) on start up I can't click on anything, just get the circle going round and round, nothing at all will open and so have to hold down the power button again and then it will be okay. Sometimes it will shut down normally but sometimes I get the error message. It is extremely annoying.

This has been going on for a while and it started after a Windows update. I have tried numerous forums to resolve this but to no avail and was directed here so hopefully you can help me.

Cheers,
nanajana

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

How long ago was the last update? Do you know what the last update was?

It will help me get abetter understanding of everything that has been done so far if you can provide me with a link to your threads at other forums.

Well that was short-lived, I am experiencing this problem yet again. When I try to open a video in a folder or on my desktop I can't. The circle just spins and spins. So then I click on task manager to stop the process but it doesn't open either. At this point I then try to restart my laptop and there is the task host window error message & it shows the folder I am trying to open. I then have the option of going back to save my work or restart anyway. I can't do either I can only shut down by holding the on/off button down til it powers down. I can open my email, browser etc.

Cheers,
nanajana

Please go Here and download MiniToolBox and save this file to your desktop.

Go to your desktop and launch MiniToolBox.exe - > Select the following options:
  • last event log

Press Go

Once finished a notepad file called Result.txt will open. Please post the contents back into this thread.

Hi,

Thanks for responding to this!
So, I tried to download minitool box from both bleeping computers & major geeks but my virus checker blocks both but I did already have minitool box on my computer (I thought it should be updated). Anyway the only option I have is to "list the last 10 event errors" which I ran. I have attached the popup message from Avast (I will also send this to Avast as both sites are reputable) and the event log.

Hello again,

I might need to see some other reports, for some more detail. Please go to C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs copy System.evtx, Application.evtx and Security.evtx to your desktop, then add them into a zip file and upload to your next post.

Hello,

Laptop seems to be working okay again, but who knows. Could it be that we aren't waiting long enough after closing a program before shutting down.

Anyway attached event logs, hope this is what you are looking for.

Cheers,
nanajana
