Windows 7 SP1 On boot up system update retrieves the 240 meg monthly file and tries to install it on power down. It fails every time since last September. I have spent time measured in days, not hours, trying to fix this. It is beyond my capability. Thanks for any help you can give me.

An Example follows:
2018-12 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4471318)
Installation date: ‎12/‎18/‎2018 3:02 AM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80073701
Update type: Important

Error Code:
WindowsUpdate_80073701" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

I have tried to follow the instructions about 5 times and have not been able to attach a file. I have gone through the upload procedure about 5 times but I see no indication that if ever attached. I hope it it there, If not, please notify me as to what to do next to get file transferred to you.
Thanks
Ken

Hello and welcome!

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information. If this does not happen for some reason, please continue with the steps anyway.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste
KB4338818 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
6. Try updates and if any fail, attach CBS.log.

I am cautiously saying that you fixed it. I have the following most recent entry in the Update History:

2018-12 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4471318)
Installation date: ‎12/‎19/‎2018 12:29 AM Installation status: Successful Update type: Important

This is the first Monthly Security Rollup that I have been able to get to install since September.

Since the updates only install on shut down, I shut the machine down and powered it up again. On power up it restarted twice saying that it was configuring Windows Update both times. It also took about 10 minutes to completely reboot. I will definitely say it is fixed after it has been powered on for 1/2 hour or so and shut down again. Windows Update downloads the updates during that 1/2 hour and applies them on shut down. There should not be any Failures (I hope).

Do I have to worry about the previous September, October, and November monthly updates not being installed?

I am very optimistic that this is fixed. I will post this in a follow up posting tomorrow after some testing. I could never have attempted to fix this on my own. I want to say that following your very complete instructions made all the difference to me in resolving this issue that has plagued me for months.

Requested Fixlog.txt is attached here:
Dropbox - Fixlog.txt

I did not attach CBS.log since I am confident that this is now fixed.

If you are ever in NW Indiana or Chicago, contact me and I'll buy dinner anywhere you want to go.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Hi!

Yes, I have fixed it. Remnants of another update were blocking the installation. I removed them from your registry which allowed the install to go through.

As for the previous updates not being installed, no worries there. MS releases Quality Rollups, so each new update contains the previous fixes.

Sadly I'm nowhere near these places, but I am very glad that your issue has been resolved. Let me know if you have further questions.

Well it has been several days now with no failures. The one monthly security update took with no problems. There have been several other updates also with no failures. So I am prepared to confirm that this issue is fixed. I just want to say thank you again. I spent several months getting nowhere on this and would still be working it without your help.

Thank you
