System File and Windows update corruptio

Hello All,

I need help with windows 8.1 setup and system file corruption:

Machine Specs:
1) HP Pavillion with 2GB Ram, Processor 2.2GHz E4500 (Intel Core 2 Duo) really old machine
2) Windows 8.1 Pro

Symptoms:
1) General slowness,
2) Unstable (would hang after every 10-15 minutes of usage)
3) Not performing windows update and would hang or run forever

Here is what I have done so far
0) Made sure there were no know virus (Avast is clean - with latest updates) and Malwarebytes was clean with latest updates
1) First Stopped the windows update service, renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder and started the service again
2) After a few installs (manually selected 2 at a time) it started hanging again
3) Ran Chkdsk /f /r on C: (This stabilized the system but the system corruption were not gone and windows update still was not working)
4) Ran DISM a bunch of times and it failed most times and completed couple of times (after 10-12 hours of wait) and problems not gone
5) Ran SFC /scannow and it marked the system files as corrupt and finished after an hour or so
6) Came across this forum and did what niemiro mentioned in instructions before posting.
a) Downloaded SFCFix and ran it - Unfortunately after 9 hours of run and repeating the same log entries in CBS.log for 6 hours (with log file size close to 200,000KB) I terminated it.
b) Since I terminated the process it did not generate SCFFix.txt
7) Attaching the CBF for the SCFFix run and prior runs of DISM hope that helps. Unfortunately Prior runs of DISM did not result in new DISM.log being created since the last DISM log seems to have some Chinese characters at the end but it did update the files date time stamp


The common entry being in the log being (From 10:37 in the morning - The process was started 7:20am)

Chkdsk Results
1. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
2. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Thank you for responding. I did as you asked above. Here are the results. but also after repeated running of SFCFix and SFC /Scannow finally gave me these three files are corrupt.

Hopefully this helps.. unfortunately I am at a loss for fixing the above Dll's as last thing I know is to re-install the OS.
 
Thank you for the information. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
 sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please


Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
 sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Sure.. Let me try that tonight... Though in the past everytime I ran it corrupted the system again. Also I seem to have 85 updates pending... Is there a method to update madness in my case? I mean what updates should be given priority new v/s old? I also heard one of the KB causes more problems and should be avoided....

Good question. I don't know the exact decision making that goes in to which updates will install first. I would assume older to newer but not sure.

I think it's OK to install all updates at the moment. Since you have 85 pending, try installing maybe just 5 and see if they go through...and then another 5 to see what happens.

Looking forward to the results.

So I started with just two updates and it ultimately errored out on the security update for 8.1 but installed the flash update for IE
