On my laptop (Win7) I have a number of outstanding windows updates (46). When I try to install them, it always starts downloading windows 10. I hit cancel, because I have 3rd party software that is incompatible with Win 10 still.

This happens every time. I have not installed KB3035583, I do not have the white windows icon on my task bar. I don't know what to do, to get the other updates to install and stop it from trying to download and install Windows 10.

I used the disk cleanup tool and told it to remove temporary installation files, but that didn't help.

thanks,

Hi campbell :)

This is a glitch in the Windows Update panel right now. As long as you don't have the Upgrade to Windows 10 checked in your update list, all the other updates you checked will be installed, even if it says that it's currently downloading Windows 10. I had it happen on a few of my VMs and the Windows 10 upgrade was never downloaded once. So start your installation, give it some time and you're updates will be installed normally.

Some of the updated failed (8 of them). I rebooted and started Windows update again to re-rtry those that failed, and it goes straight to the Downloading Windows 10 again. Is it going to keep doing this? It takes a long time for updates to run this way.

Yes, it'll keep on doing this sadly since it's a "bug" with the Windows Update interface. However, if your updates are failing, the issue lies somewhere else. Follow the instructions below please.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

I restarted and re-ran the Windows update. All outstanding updates were successful, but it still does the Windows 10 thing, and takes a LOT longer than it used to do.

It means that it's already set on it. Alright, check every item in the list and proceed to the clean up.

Alright, now check for Windows Updates again and install them (if there's any you need). Do you still get the "Download Windows 10" message?

Windows ia up to date, so I can't tell yet if this fixes the issue. I'll have to wait for an new update.

The next Patch Tuesday is in a month, unless Microsoft releases out of bound updates (which I'm sure they'll do), so you can test then.

OK, thanks for your help. As soon as I see another update, I'll drop a note here.

No problem chuck, you're welcome :)

One important update available this morning. I said to do it, and it went straight to the "Downloading Windows 10" again. It only stayed there for a minute this time, and then finished the other update quickly.
