STATUS_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING error during install of KB4522355

My new laptop is pretty unstable; it seems like a bad video chip but I was hoping if I install all the updates it might stop crashing (black screen - no error).
It probably crashed during a previous update, but there isn't really that much to uninstall. It seems likely the v1903 update is actually the problem, but I don't really want to roll that one back as it's likely to be a headache.
SFC and DISM both originally found problems. After a few tries over several days, those are both reporting no further issues. The KB4522355 update still fails, however.

I'm not really sure how to read the CBS.log -- I can see the problem but I don't know what it's missing, exactly. I'd really appreciate it if someone can suggest how I can try to copy the missing file from another computer, or install a cab file or something?

Hello and welcome!

I'd have you run the following instead:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.
