[SOLVED] Startup Error - BAD SYSTEM CONFIG INFO

I have a PC that will not boot. I support the PC for a lady who was not able to tell me anything about what was going on when it started to fail. In her mind it was working and now it is doing this. The first screen says your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. At the bottom of the screen, it says BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO. There are several screens that follow - Preparing automatic repair, Diagnosing your PC, then Attempting repairs. Then - Automatic Repair couldn't repair the PC.

This is a Dell Inspiron 3670 destop.
I installed Wndows 10 in 2020 - although the Continue button says "Exit and Continue to Windows 11. I'm not sure if Windows 11 has been (or attempted to be) installed.

In Troubleshooting, Advanced Options, I have attempted Startup Repair, Uninstalled Quality and Feature Updates, and System Restore. Both system restores failed. The second newest restore failed with the message " System failed to extract the file: (C:\Windows\service\Packages|PA11B50~1.CAT) from the restore point. (0x80071160)".

Command prompt I ran sfc /scannow. I got the message: Verification 100% complete. Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Under Troubleshoot I did not attempt Reset this PC or Factory Image Restore because I wanted advice before that.

I looked at the Sysnative BSOD Posting Instructions. Since I can't use that PC I am going to need some guidance to get information off of it. I have downloaded Sysnative BSOD Dump + System File Collection App to a thumb drive and found the thumb drive on the bad PC using Command Line. But I'm not sure how to execute it and where the dump will be written.

So I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Don

Hi,

The Sysnative BSOD collection tool is of no use when you cannot boot.

In the Windows directory in the command line, there will be a Minidump folder containing dump files. Could you copy those to the thumb drive and upload them here. You will need to create a zip file of them first on a different computer.

Have you seen any other errors besides the bad_system_config error?

I would also check for the MEMORY.DMP too which should be available here:

Rich (BB code):
dir %systemroot%\MEMORY.DMP

Thanks for your quick responses.

Unfortunately, I was not able to find the minidump folder or memeory.dmp. I hope I was looking in the right place.

When I go to command line it directs me to the X drive. Thinking the C drive may be different I have attached files of the windows directory of both.

I don't see my attached files in the previous post, so I am reposting to make sure they are attached and including the files in the post

Sorry for this. Let me know if the files are attached
Don

I see them now. The first time there was no extension.

Having read your initial post more closely, this doesn't actually appear to be a BSOD issue but rather a startup repair issue. Does the following log file exist?

Rich (BB code):
C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

Note, that you will need to change the directory to C:\ using the dir command from command prompt.

The log file looks fine, you can ignore the last error since it happens on all machines. This is going to be related to a corrupted registry hive. I would suggest attempting to do a repair install using the Windows 11 MCT and then ensuring that you select the option to keep all programs and files.

Please note that since the system doesn't boot, you'll need to boot up the MCT from a working machine and then create the .ISO. You can then place the .ISO onto a bootable DVD or USB and then mount the .ISO from there. Once done, then open the setup.exe and it should give you the option "to upgrade" the system.

This would be my first exposure to Windows 11 and I would want to do it on my own PC before I did it on someone else’s. I would be more comfortable with trying to go back to Windows 10. I have a Recovery Disk created when I set up this PC in Jan 2020. I would prefer to use that if possible but only if we could keep all the programs and files. It is important that we keep things looking the same for this client.

I just changed the BIOS to boot from the Recovery Disk and used it to boot the PC and it took me to the “Choose your keyboard layout” screen. So is this a viable option? I realize I would have to apply all the Windows updates since the recovery disk was created. That is something I am more comfortable with.

But if the PC is in a state that it is not viable to do that, then we could proceed in taking it to Windows 11. It would be a good growth experience for me.

I did look at the link in your last response to see what would be involved. I will need some guidance in order to do what is necessary.

I assume I want to go to the section Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO).

I look through the Before you start. I think I am okay with creating an ISO. Can I assume since the PC was created in 2020 that it meets the system requirements? I have a product sheet for this PC so I can see the processor, ram and storage are good but I don’t know about the rest.

Are there any Windows OS Product Keys needed for either the 10 or 11 installs?

I appreciate your help with this.

It seems that the user is already running Windows 11 so the system must meet the compatibility requirements. There is no real difference in terms of UI between Windows 10 and Windows 11, other than a couple of things may have been moved around slightly.

Are there any Windows OS Product Keys needed for either the 10 or 11 installs?
The Windows 10 and Windows 11 licence key is interchangeable and should already have been written to the BIOS, so the system will activate itself again once the "upgrade" has completed. You can try the recovery disc if you prefer - either way, one of the registry hives is going to be corrupted and therefore only a repair install or booting from the recovery disk is going to resolve the issue.

I realize I would have to apply all the Windows updates since the recovery disk was created.
You shouldn't have to install that many - most of the updates will have been rolled up into the latest cumulative update so it may only have to install a couple of updates in order to be on the latest build.

I attempted to use the Windows 10 recovery disk but it warned me that all programs and files would be deleted so I did not use that.

I created Windows 11 iso DVD. I used it to boot the problem PC. First screen was pick Language, Time and Keyboard. I took the defaults. The next screen had Install Now in the center. In the lower left was the choice "Repair this computer". It took me through screens very similar to the ones I have been seeing before. On the "Choose an option screen" I picked Troubleshoot. On Advanced Options I picked Startup Repair. It gave me a Startup Repair screen that had me pick Windows 11. I had not seen this screen previously. It gave another Startup Repair screen that said "Startup Repair could not repair your PC". It referenced reference the SrtTrail.txt file which I have attached.

On the second screen should I have picked the "Install Now" option instead of "Repair this Computer"? Will it later give a choice to save the programs and files?

I won't be able to work on this tomorrow. My next shot will be sometime Sunday.

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it's not going to work - I've just tested it - your best option is to create a Linux Live CD and then backup any important files and/or data. From there, you can either then perform a clean install or examine the SYSTEM hive and check how corrupt it is. If it's corrupt beyond repair then you're going to have to do a clean install.

When you say "I tested it" do you mean it will not give me the option to save the files and apps?

I just did an Xcopy of c:\users\carol for a backup as I normally do before doing any install or upgrade. I realize I don't get any apps in that, but I would be able to put back photos and documents directories which is where I think most of her data would be.

I have not used the Linux Live CD. I noticed there are a bunch out there. Do you have a recommended one? Will it give me the ability to see what programs may have been loaded beyond the operating system?

I have never looked at a SYSTEM hive. I would need help seeing how corrupt it is. Never having dealt with that I am wondering if I would be better off doing a clean install. I would be relying on your confidence of success and lack of future problems repairing it.

Let me ask again in light of I may need to do a clean install, will I need I need a product key or would it still be in the bios? Would the Linux Live cd help me recover that?

Thanks for your response.

You don't need to do anything with the license key, Windows will automatically detect and apply it.

Looking through Program Files I see Microsoft Office is installed. I assume those would be wiped out with a clean install. Can you give me any help capturing those keys?

Thanks

Depending on how you bought the software, you can find the key in the email, on the physical copy, or it may be registered to a particular account. We can't provide much help there.

A clean install removes everything. It is like the first time that you started using your computer, but without any software that may have come along from the vendor. All files, folders, pictures, programs, customization, configuration, etc. are deleted with a clean install.

I did a clean install of Windows 11. It never asked me for a Product key.

As it turns out there was no MS Office on the PC before the clean install. I now have a Microsoft account setup for my client's daughter, and I can see the PC there.

So it is up and running now. Thanks for all your help with this.

As I look at this page the replies show as N/A for my case and a couple others. Can you explain this?

BSOD Crashes, Kernel Debugging

Do I have to do anything to close this case?
