Sony Vaio VGN-TT-16GN, Vista Business SP 2, 1.4 dual core CPU 4 RAM, 256 SSD.

Notebook fails to shut down, seems to enter loop at "Shutting down", goes on for hours.
Cutting power only way to shut off.

Notebook often responds sluggish to input, sometimes takes 15 seconds, occasionally longer.
Especially with Firefox, which often seems to hog CPU and RAM

WMI service on automatic, does not start even manually, error 1083

Tried so far:

sfc
chkdsk
Tweaking Windows Repair Pro in safe mode, all repairs, ran twice.
Memory check, no issues.
Virus/Malware with Avast, no issues

Helpful ideas are welcome.
Thank you.

Hi Humble,

How old is your notebook and what SSD are you using?

This is very likely a bottleneck, how long does it roughly take for the notebook to startup completely (including services, startup programs and everything else)?

UPDATE:
system sluggish and unresponsive.
also cannot run and/or install programs I downloaded.
double clicking the exe files does nothing.

boot time approximately 90 seconds

as mentioned earlier, WMI service does not start.
can you tell me how to get it going?

btw...there are no restore points!

Please run the following command in a (admin) command prompt (powershell will not work), copy it and paste it in your next post
Code:
sc qc winmgmt

Please run the following command in an admin command prompt to see if we're dealing with a repository or corrupted WMI.
Code:
winmgmt /verifyrepository
A non-corrupted WMI / repository returns "WMI repository is consistent".

Hi, axe0, thanks, I ran this just recently and did it again just now, according to your request.
the result was then - and is now: "WMI repository is consisten"

axe0, I truly appreciate your time and attention to this matter and am sure you are doing the best you can.
at the same time I sense that we are not making much progress.

could it be we need more help ?

any of the veteran experts here like to offer a hand?

Hi Humble,

At the moment we're in a diagnosis process to identify the root cause. I'm not eager to just provide random suggestions with anything I may find unless I'm certain it really does contribute to the point where we want to get. Until now, my suggestions were to confirm the Windows Managememt Instrumentation service is as it should be, which it appears to be. From this perspective I'd say we are making good progress.

Simple thing, but are all updates in Windows Update installed?

EDIT: if you remember things that you tried, but haven't yet mentioned, please post them.

Hi Axe0,

well it´s nice to know that you seem to be satisfied with the progress.
Still, I would like to invite input from other experts who wish to share their ideas.

To your questions:

Remember, in my first post I mention that the WMI service fails to start -- even though set on automatic.
The exact wording of the error message when I try to start the service manually:

"Windows could not start the Windows Management Instrumentation service on Local Computer.
Error 1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run does not implement the service."

Maybe I am missing something but does that seem as it should be to you?

Not sure all updates installed as Windows update not working.

besides what I had mentioned, I ran several popular anti-malware and virus programs, including the installed avast.
none found issues.
