Hello,

when I try to perform Windows updates on a Windows server 2016 machine, I always get the Update status "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)".

I can then click on the button "retry" and the machine is again "checking for updates..." & starts downloading updates (in this case it's downloading "2020-01 Cumulative Update for Windows server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB4534307)").

Then it tries again to install "2020-01 Cumulative Update for Windows server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB4534307)" but it fails to install (when I check "update history" it says "Failed to install on 07/02/2020").

Attached to this post you will also find a document with screenshot of relevant application and system event viewer messages.
Anyone any idea how to solve this one?

thanks in advance for any help!

brgds,

Joeri Kumbruck

Hi. . .

Try the following:

 • Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4027322/windows-update-troubleshooter
 • Bring up an Elevated Administrative Command Prompt - Open an Elevated Administrative Command Prompt (CMD) - Windows 10
 • Run sfc /scannow from an Admin Command Prompt
 • Run DISM to restore file health from an Elevated Admin Command Prompt - DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
 • Step 1 - Bring up an Elevated Admin Command Prompt
 • Step 2 - Type "net stop wuauserv" (no quotes) and click "Enter". Type "net stop bits" and click "Enter". This will turn off "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" and "Automatic Updates".
 • Step 3 - Type "net stop cryptsvc" and click "Enter". Type "ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2" and click "Enter". Type "net start cryptsvc" and click "Enter". This will rename "Catroot2". Type "exit" to close "command prompt".
 • Restart Windows Update services (substitute "start" for "stop" in the above commands

Slight alternative for the above - Fixing Error Code 0x80073712 on Windows 10 - from Auslogics -

Hello jcgriff2,

thanks for your answer.

When I do a sfc /scannow then it stops after 1 minute with the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the cbs.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."

Attached to this post you will find the CBS.log file

Thanks.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
