Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help me solve a problem with Windows 10 I've been experiencing as of 1809. When trying to change account picture (it's currently the default), I get the message "Account picture error Setting the account picture failed. Please try again".

I've tried exploring fixes posted all over the place but none seem resolved this. The main account I experience this issue on is a Microsoft account, however the issue persists when a new local account is created.

SFC and DISM do not find anything and I have also tried making SystemData.old

Interestingly in the registry there are no SID in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AccountPicture\Users, nor are there any in C:\Users\Public\AccountPictures - hidden and system files are both set to show. There is only a desktop.ini.

Any ideas at all would be highly appreciated.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Digerati,

Thanks for the reply, I looked at this solution also.

This does change the image, but rather than it fixing the error it simply replaces the placeholder image and changes all usernames to the same picture and the image still cannot be changed via settings.

Hi Daniel. . .

It could be that the user profile is corrupted.

See if you can change the user account picture successfully on a different user account.

If you don't have another user account, activate and test with the Hidden Admin account - Enable/ Disable the Hidden Administrator User Account (Windows 8.1 / 8)

That is a Windows 8.1 tutorial.

It's the same basic procedure for Windows 10.

Be sure to re-hide the Hidden Admin user account when done.

If you do decide to create a new user account, do so while logged on to the Hidden Admin user account. Using the one you are having trouble with may cause problems for a new user account; not sure.

Regards. . .

Hi Digerati, jcgriff2,

The folder is totally empty on both accounts. I have checked both the public user image folder as well as my own in %appdata%.

The same thing seems to persist even when creating a new user using net user to open the Administrator account.

To throw a little more interest into the mix, I went and did a system reset for Windows wiping all files, but the issue is still there. Interestingly now there IS a user image that defaults for all profiles, but this is due to the default OEM one replacing the original Windows one. (The system is a Corsair One).
