Hi everybody!

I am trying to upgrade Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro (I know this is a really BAD move but I am giving it a shot.)

I tried 4 -5 times with Windows Update and it always failed with error 80004005.

I tried reset Windows Update components and it failed.

I tried multiple times Tweaking.com Windows Repair All In One and it failed to correct the problem.

I tried 3-4 times with the Media Creation Tool (MCT) and I never got to the DVD file writing.

I completely uninstalled Bitdefender 2016 Security Suite and it still failed to create the DVD windows upgrade using the MCT.

So here we are:

Hello and Welcome!

Do you have a flash drive that you could use to create the installation media using the Media Creation Tool?

What error message does the Media Creation Tool give when it fails?

Hi zcomputerwiz! Thanks for replying! Well, I have a CD-R that I put into the DVD drive when using Windows Backup. Of course, I used a blank CD-R. I put CD-R into DVD drive and the Windows Backup does NOT see CD-R into drive. It ONLY just lists local disk (D) {Recovery Disk} The problem reports have been sent and are no longer there but I got this the last time I tried MCT. This is the first time that I NOTICED that I get this error (80072efe). ********** Source Host Process for Windows Services Summary Windows Update installation problem Date ‎22/‎07/‎2016 8:02 AM Status Report sent Description A Windows update did not install properly. I am SORRY but I did NOT copy all the View technical details of all the Window Update and MCT failures. Hope this helps! T787

Hi zcomputerwiz!

I have performed the following operations to try to remedy error 80072efe:

**********

1. Click Start, click Run, type in "SERVICES.MSC" and press Enter.

2. Double click Cryptographic Services, and then click Stop (if it has been started).

3. Locate the "C:\Windows\System32" folder.

4. Delete the Catroot2 sub-folder in System32.

5. Click Start, click Run, type in "SERVICES.MSC" and press Enter.

6. Double click Cryptographic Services, and then click Start.

**********

I did DELETE catroot2 sub-folder but there still was a catroot2.bak file which I did NOT touch.

I have RUN MCT one more time to get the error messages that you are seeking.

As before, the Windows 10 installation failed and I get the following problem reports (two) :

Looks like setup is unable to copy the boot configuration data, the error specifies access denied.
Let's verify that.

No, unfortunately SURT will not fix boot configuration issues.

Please make a backup of any important data on the computer before continuing.

Follow the instructions here to rebuild the boot configuration: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...y-fix-boot-configuration-windows-7-vista.html

If you encounter any problems, please post back immediately.
Be sure you have Windows 7 boot media (such as a Windows 7 installation disc) handy so that we can troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

If there are no errors and the computer boots successfully after rebuilding the BCD, please run the Windows 10 upgrade again.

Checking Windows Recovery Options:

Repair Your Computer is hollow option since it takes me to the NORMAL startup.

Repair Your Computer is apparently NOT installed on this hard drive local disk:C.

I have NO Windows 7 installation disc.

I have Recovery hard drive local disk D .

It has boot file folder (15 files , 15.7MB, 2/26/2014) including bcd, BCD.LOG (2/26/2014), BCD.LOG1 (7/29/2016).

This file was MODIFIED on 7/17/2016.

It also has sources file folder (5 files, 4.66GB, 2/26/2014).

Modify File/Folder Permissions

  1. Navigate to the following folder, right-click on it and select Properties:

    D:\boot\BCD

  2. Under the Security tab, click Advanced.
  3. Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  4. Click "Other Users and Groups".
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Click "Find Now".
  7. Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  8. Click OK THREE times.
  9. Click on the Permissions tab.
  10. Under type Deny, single click on any entries and click Remove. (N.B.: There may not be any Deny entries, in which case just ignore this step. Just remove any that do exist)
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  13. Click Add.
  14. Click Advanced.
  15. Click "Find Now".
  16. Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  17. Click OK.
  18. Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  19. Click OK TWO times.

Once this completes, let's remove the read only attributes etc.

icacls "D:\boot" /T /C /grant "everyone":(OI)(CI)F
