SFCFixExample.jpgEDIT: This is what shows up now.

Hello, I cannot access my PC settings it just freezes the computer whenever I try to access it. I ran sfc\scannow in the command prompt under administrator and get 'CNBJ2530.DPB and prncacla.inf Corruptions - Windows 8/8.1.'

I found the thread on here regarding this issue and ran SFCFix.exe on my desktop with no other files or programs running and the SFCFix stalled at 40% for 3 hours with the computer not making any processing sounds. I found another thread on here that said to download SFCFix.zip and drop it into SFCFix.exe and show the output. The SFCFix.zip file was no longer available so I could not try this solution.

I am writing on here to hopefully get SFCFix.exe to fix the CNBJ2530.DPB file and ultimately be able to access PC settings without freezing the computer up.

I have attached my CBS.Log zip so you can see what is wrong.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named BrianDrab. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello. Thanks, this should be fine for me if the fixes work. I have time to get it working properly so the delays shouldn't be a problem.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's start with the following and see if we can get you fixed up.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Items for your next post

Thanks, it sfc/scannow said no integrity violations now. The bad news is PC settings still freezes the computer and I have to press ctrl-alt-delete and sign out in order to get back to the desktop:

That's unfortunate about the freezing issue you are having. It may not be due to any corruption but let's verify that there is none left first. Please do the following.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

I cannot boot into windows now and safe mode does not work either. I tried doing a refresh and it did not work. I also tried doing a reset and it processed for and hour and a half doing nothing. Is there any way I can get Windows to boot again? I do not have a hard copy of windows to put in the USB drive or CD drive.

Just to confirm, this happened after you performed the following command correct?

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

No, this happened after running SFCFix with the zip file. Then I ran SFC /scannow. The computer was acting funny when trying to open PC settings and I had to restart it. Now I have reset it but the computer froze while trying to reset overnight and now it says the drive has no operating system on it. I guess I have to get a hard copy of the OS now to restore.

Thanks for the information. Is there any information on your computer that you need to try and save? If so I can attempt to walk you through recovering this information.

Then we can look to trying to fix or likely reload your machine. The symptoms that you initially came here with points to a possible hard drive failure as well.

Also let me know the make/model of your computer. Is there any warranty left on it?

Luckily, I had backed everything up to the cloud. I have fully re-installed Windows Embedded Industry 8.1 Pro and I do not know why it is embedded. I cannot activate for some reason. It says, "Error code: 0x8007232B Error description: DNS name does not exist."

I may have the wrong version of Windows downloaded? I just want to have Windows 8.1 Pro.

The make of the computer is an old Acer Aspire X3190 from about 5 years ago.

That's great news that you had everything backed up. Windows Embedded 8.1 is definitely the wrong version. Did your machine originally come with Windows 8 or was it installed after the fact?

Windows 8.1 was installed after about 4 years. It originally ran Windows 7 and had a lot of bugs (randomly shutting down and freezing, CD burner did not work). When I installed Windows 8 the bugs went away for a time until I realized I couldn't access PC settings.

I will try and re-install Windows 8.1 Pro by downloading it from Microsoft or my school site where it is free to students.

I got this software free for being a CS student and apparently embedded is all they offer. I think this will work fine for me as long as I can get it activated.

EDIT: I was able to activate by going to DreamSpark and getting my key. Thank you. Should I check to see if the hard drive is working properly?

OK I understand. I would highly recommend that you check the hard drive to ensure it's in good working order. If you need assistance with this please do the following to collect some info on your hard drive so I can provide the proper tool.

1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
wmic diskdrive get name,model > %userprofile%\desktop\driveinfo.txt

3. Copy/Paste the contents of the driveinfo.txt file.

Thank you.

Model Name
Generic- Compact Flash USB Device \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE1
WDC WD6400AAKS-22A7B2 \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0
Multiple Flash Reader USB Device \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE2

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't even have a flash drive in the usb port so that is weird.

Thanks for the info. You have a Western Digital drive so ideally you would run the manufacturers own tool found at the following link however they don't specifically state Windows 8.1 as being supported. Only Windows 8 however I would think it would run. I've used other disk testing tools such as Seagate's SeaTools on windows 8.1 and they worked even though they didn't specifically say it was supported on it.
WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor

Please run the Quick and Extended tests and report back the results.

Lastly I wanted to ensure that you understood that your symptoms that you have (i.e. freezing even when on Windows 7 previously) are very likely to be an impending hardware failure. It may be the hard drive (we'll see) or it may be the motherboard of your computer. I just wanted to make sure you had all the facts and understood. You may very well start having the same issues again and again no matter how many times you wipe/load the machine. Your machine may very well be on borrowed time.

Thanks.

OK good. If you continue to have issues it unfortunately may be your motherboard. I'm sorry you had so much trouble but am glad you are up and running. Is there anything else we can help with?
