Two windows updates, KB3038936 & KB3046017, are failing with error code 80070026, which is stopping me upgrading to Windows 10. Here is the SFCFix.txt ...

As I am an impatient fool, I ignored all your warnings in red type and applied one of your fixes for someone with what I thought were exactly the same problems. Anyway, either that or something else that I tried, really messed things up, :eek4:so I had to restore from the System Image I had thankfully taken before I started.
Here's the SFCFix.txt contents (which I think are the same) and I'm attaching just the CBS.log zipped up as the whole folder is way too big (though the old one is still shared on my OneDrive):

Thanks.

Good job for the SFC scan, it was our next step :) Now we have a second fix to apply, and a new SFC scan to do after that.

We need to run SFC again, it seems like this one didn't went throught.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Don't worry about it :) The fix worked, the SFC returned a clean CBS.log. Can you try to install the updates again? If they fail, upload the following files for me to review.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

mark, did you ever change a folder's location (did a redirection on it) or played with symbolic and/or hard links? For instance, I redirected my Documents folder (which is located in C:\Users\Aura\Documents) to my HDD (which is D:\Yoan\Documents). Do you recall doing any kind of manipulation like this?

Guilty. I have a 128Gb SSD and so I want to restrict what goes there.
I've redirected as much of the user area to my D: drive as I can, but I may not have done it the best right way.
Microsoft make it so difficult to find out the correct way.
And yesterday I tried to move the default StoreApps location, but that has messed up too.
Is there anything you can do to help?
Mark

How did you redirect the folders exactly? Did you right-click on them, go under the Location tab, entered a new path and clicked on Apply? Also, can you list which folders exactly you redirected?

Ahhh, now there's a question. I tried to some research before I did anything, but I'm not sure which of the following I did:
  • Create a folder, robocopy all data from current folder, create join to new folder and delete current folder.
  • Used the location option, which I may have found out about too late
May I ask a counter-question?
It may be a lot of work, but should I consider doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1, then upgrade to Windows 10 and then ask your advice on how I should persuade Windows to put as much as possible on my capacious D: drive?
Mark

If you do a fresh installation of Windows 8.1, you would have no problem upgrading to Windows 10, yes. And I can assist you in creating proper redirections after as well, since I did it on my desktop and it works flawlessly.

Thank you Aura. I think I will inflict the pain of reinstalling Windows 8.1 and upgrading to Windows 10 and then come with my begging bowl to ask how to do the redirection properly.
It may be a week or two before I have it done though.
Will this thread still be open?

At this point, your issue won't be related to Windows Update anymore, so you can create a new thread in the Windows 10 section instead. Once done, you are free to send me a PM so I can check it out :)
