I have older laptop with Windows 7 32-bit. It's stuck in Windows upgrades on system shutdown. It's trying to continuously update Windows on every shutdown. SFC /scannow is not completing successfully.

Hard drive was scanned successfuly with Malwarebytes and Windows Checdisk.

Please help.

Very good.

Let's scan with SFC.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

OK went smooth.

SFC completed 100% and didn't find any integrity violations.

Log file attached. Should I try Windows update? Looking very good :)

I ran Windows update. Out of 2 critical updates that were stuck for a long time one was successful and one failed.

Please try to install the failed update again, then after it fails, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

I checked the update today and I don't have any outstanding critical updates anymore. The one that failed is not on the list of updates today. I only have optional updates right now, none of them has the number listed above as failed :) Maybe the newer update replaced previous from Dec. 2017 and it is not required anymore.

I did optional update Monthly quality rollup dated May 2018 and it completed successful.
I have green check mark in Widows Updates and "No important updates available" message. :)
Looks like I got my problem solved :)

I went through couple more critical updates without a glitch. I still have screen left behind on my Win 7 machine from Windows 10 free upgrade that didn't complete. It keeps popping up in the upgrade app. It used to go through lengthy process of upgrading windows and failing at the end. Right now when I click "Try Again" it opens update app. Beck then when Windows 10 upgrade was offered I tried to get to the bottom of the error. From the error numbers it looked like the Intel CPU processor was lacking a function. Right now I'm thinking it could have been part of this "Manifest damage" issue.

Win10 Upgrade Error.PNG

Which Intel processor do you have?

If you have attempted the Windows 10 upgrade, please zip and attach C:\Windows.~bt\Sources\Panther\SetupAct.log and SetupErr.log

I have Intel Core2 Duo CPU T8100 @2.10 GHz on this laptop with Windows 7 32bit.

I checked my hard drive extensively and I don't have C:\Windows.~bt folder at all. I found the SetupAct.log and Err files in multiple locations with various dates and sizes. Don't know if any of them apply to what you are looking for.

I'm not sure if any of the disk cleanup procedures that I did in the past removed Windows.~bt folder. The log from C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\Pather\setupact.log is from 2008 and probably not related to Win10 upgrade.

I'm not sure if the digital entitlement would be activated on your laptop from the previous attempt, but if you would like to try the upgrade tool is available here: Download Windows 10
I would recommend creating installation media using an 8GB flash drive, since the first installation will most likely fail.
