SFCFix output attached.
Windows Update has been running for almost an hour now with 0% movement: `Installing Update 1 of 1... System Readiness Tool for Windows...`

Also note that the other error message I referred to in my original post when trying to install other apps was: `windows cannot access the specified device path or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item`

Windows Update finished with the following message:
Succeeded: 1 update
Failed: 2 updates
WindowsUpdate_80070005 error

Which update succeeded and which ones didn't ?
Which security/antivirus programs do you have installed ?

SURT installed successfully.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and Definition update for Windows Defender AV not installed.

Before the issue began I had AVG installed but it seems it was not running correctly. I also could not open it.
Tried installing Avira - The AV component does not install.
Went into Safe Mode and installed Malware bytes.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

There is a hacktool present to use Windows and / or Office not legitimately.
It is against the rules to help people with an illegal operating system or other illegally used programs.
Hacktools can make your system slower and also less secure.
Do you agree that we continue to do a repair attempt for this computer that will also remove the hacktool ?

Yes. I wasn't aware of the hacktool...fixing the pc for a friend - just spoke to them and they said to proceed to fix the pc.

Good. We start with the normal removal of all AV programs. There are to many, 3 are still installed and a remnant of a 4th one.
Never install more than one AV program. This may cause conflicts and slows down the computer.

Step 1:
Uninstall Avast Free Antivirus and restart the machine afterwards.
Follow the instructions to run the Avast Uninstall Utility: Using the Uninstall Utility for Avast Antivirus | Official Avast Support

Step 2:
Uninstall Avira and restart the machine afterwards.
If other Avira products are still listed, uninstall these too.

Step 3:
Uninstall AVG AntiVirus FREE and restart the machine afterwards.
If AVG Web TuneUp is still listed, uninstall it too.

Step 4:
Download the AVG Remover.
Note: Disable the realtime-protection of other antivirus programs temporary.
Start the AVG Remover and click Continu.
It will scan for installed AVG products. If any found, select them and let the tool remove it.
Follow the instructions given and restart the machine when being asked.

Hi, tried the 1st step - Avast uninstall utility and I am getting exactly the same error I had quoted earlier:

"windows cannot access the specified device path or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item"

Also note, that the reason I installed other AVs is because I could not re-install AVG which was not running.

Any suggestions?

Run the Avast Uninstall Utility as mentioned in step 1.

I have completed steps 2, 3, and 4. Then went back to step 1 and was able to successfully uninstall Avast. A windows update was also installed when I shut down the computer.
Next steps?

Great.

Right-click the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
Press the Scan button.
Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.
