Hello, I've been attempting to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10, but when I try to open the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, I get this error in the below image. I also get a similar error, just 0x80072F8F, when I try to update Windows Defender.

I tried quite a few fixes, but nothing worked so far, which lead me to trying SFCFix, which found 1 corruption that could not be fixed automatically. Pasting the resulting notepad below. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee, any instructions I give you must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay to any of my replies, so please be patient.

  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS ... folder.
  • Right click on it, and select ... Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  • A message will appear stating, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
    • Answer Y to create a folder CBS.zip on your Desktop.
  • Please attach it to your next post.
    • If the file is too large, please upload it to a file sharing service and provide the link to it in your next reply.
    • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

So I get this error after hitting yes, create file on desktop

Found the fix in niemiro's Forum Posting Instructions. I had to copy CBS folder to desktop before creating the zip. My bad for not following that originally, but leaving this in so you can help other people with that issue.

Looking over your logs now, back as soon as I've finished (this may take some time).

Please download the file I've linked to below ...

Download Link

  • Right click on the zipped package and select Extract All
  • Open the folder created ... wetransfer_windows6-1-kb4555449-x64-cab_2022-02-26_1344
  • Copy the folder/file ... Windows6.1-KB4555449-x64.cab ... to your Desktop (must be in that location)

Once you've done that ...

  • Click Start
  • In the Search Programs and Files box type cmd.exe
  • From the list of found items right click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
  • Allow the UAC prompt.
  • This will open a Command Window.
  • Now copy/paste the following command ... Dism /Add-Package /PackagePath:"%userprofile%\Desktop\Windows6.1-KB4555449-x64.cab" /IgnoreCheck /PreventPending
  • Hit Enter

Windows should now try to install a Service Stack Update to your computer.

If successful, reboot your computer, then let me know, do not attempt to update yet.

If unsuccessful, please attach your .... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log .... file with your next reply.

Please don't attempt fixes from other sources whilst we're working on your machine, it only makes things more complicated to resolve if I don't know what you've been doing between fixes.

Your problems appear at least in part from a missing SSU (service stack update), which we tried (unsuccessfully) to install last time.

I'm now working on an alternative set of instructions, to do the same thing, and will post them once I've had them approved.

  • Download: windows6.1-kb4555449-x64_92202202c3dee2f713f67adf6622851b998c6780.msu
  • Copy the MSU file to your desktop.
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enterafter each
    • cd %userprofile%\Desktop
    • expand windows6.1-kb4555449-x64_92202202c3dee2f713f67adf6622851b998c6780.msu -f:* %userprofile%\Desktop
    • DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:%userprofile%\Desktop\windows6.1-kb4555449-x64.cab
  • You should receive the message: The operation completed successfully.
  • Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.
  • If you receive any other message:
    • Post a screenshot of the Command Prompt window.
    • Zip and attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Success thanks. Same error when I try to open win10 media creation tool (just checking if that fixed it)

OK, please can you post your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Have you rebooted your computer, if not please do so, and then try opening W10 Media Creation tool again.

Let me know the result.

OK thanks.

Can you post me your latest CBS.log please.

I need to see whether the re-boot has changed anything, or whether the same errors are still showing.

So I reran SFC /scannow thinking it was just a scan as I wanted to check if the prior fix solved the corrupt files. It found more corrupt files and made some fixes. Heres the log. Should I run SFCFix?

Please hold on doing anything until I get back to you.

Sorry for the delay, there was a lot of log to check through ....

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download SFCFix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and also save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Restart the computer.
  • Run the command SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt and report the result.
  • If it fails, attach a zipped C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your next reply.
