After installing latest round of MS updates on 5/14/2014, I've had a GUI that keeps popping up about an error, run chkdsk, repair or restore Vista OS. Chkdsk doesn't find any errors. Sfc /scannow ends with message that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Looking through the CBS log, I see where, apparently, repairs have been made or started, but then it seems to just stop. The event viewer indicates critical errors in the cryptographic services. Tried to open the file in question, and there is a problem it seems with the catalog file - can't open the package 8 file but can open the package 9 file with the same file name. I hope my description isn't so cryptic that someone can help me solve this. I thought about rolling back the latest round of updates. I'm wondering what the result would be if I deleted the package 8 file. Not used to fixing problems at this level.
Saved the eventlog for error 1005 (critical) and will attach. Also am attaching CBS log file. Vista Home Premium, SP2 on a Dell XPS M1530. Other than this GUI that keeps appearing, the only other thing I've noticed is that some programs, OneNote and Word seem to freeze with the "Not Responding" message in the title bar and then system seems to "wake up" and things display. PLEASE HELP. I'm a job seeker not getting a whole lot done in the last few days because of this annoying problem:shame2:
