sfc /scannow found corrupt files (Windows 8.1)

Hi,

Today I had a BSOD, then on rebooting I got one of those "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them". I ran scannow /r [i.e. repair], which seems to have got it working somewhat. I didn't try another suggestion at the Command prompt which was dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. I assume that (if it even worked with Windows 8.1) would tie things up even longer. The CBS log files said "Sysprep Warning: Corruption detected. Marking Sysprep Corrupt. All Sysprep Commands will be ignored" against various entries.

e.g. lines and lines like:

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome!

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named Bruce1270. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hi Frankymole

Sorry for the delay. I would like to get your COMPONENTS hive registry.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Hi

It doesn't look like the file has copied correctly. Can you try again please.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file. It should have file type as File.
2. Right click this file and select Copy. Then click onto your desktop, right click and select Paste. Do not rename the file.

Thanks

That file in C:\Windows\System32\Config is dated July 26, 2012. It's over 8 years old. Will it be any use? Is there a way to get a more up-to-date one? It is also empty (0 KB memory size).

That one should be fine. Just go ahead and copy and send the link. Cheers.

the file should not be 0 size. Are you looking at the file called COMPONENTS. It should be there along with other files called SOFTWARE, SECURITY etc.

Perfect! that's the one I need.

Will be back with you shortly.

Cheers

Hi Frankymole

Please do the following

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.

  1. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  3. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  4. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now process the script.
  6. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  7. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put tags around the log to break up the text.

Your system is still at windows 8. Would you like assistance with upgrading this to windows 8.1?

Thank you! I'll give it a try now.

I don't want to change to Windows 8.1.

How do I get "sfc.exe" to appear? sfc.zip downloads when I click on it, which lets me then move that to my desktop. But I can't see "sfc.exe" anywhere.

Ah, found it on the desktop, somewhere in the middle of other icons as it's dated 2015...

Ran it as instructed and got this:

(It did say "stage 1 of 6 failed at server" in the command window when it ran. The other stages seemed to run okay.)

Apologies for the delay! Please do the following:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

When I put in copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt, it says "The syntax of the command is incorrect."

Putting just "
%windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt", it says "Access is denied".

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:2999226

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
