Hi there,

Windows server 2019, 1809 (OS Build 17763.5576) - refuses to install latest cumulative patch (april 2024) for Windows.
More specifically: KB5036896

Tried the usual fix - running
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

and then

sfc /scannow.

The latter - stops @ 75% - Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

DISM commands - fails @ 97,5%with this error code: Error: 0xd0000034

We use SCCM for patchning - so in order to let DISM go fetch updates directly from Microsoft - I have made this a change to local group policy on the server. (like shown here - Fix RSAT Tools Installation Error 0x800f0954).

Attached cbs.zib, componentsscanner.txt and chkdsk result.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the System File Checker and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
SFC /Scannow

Hello Maxstar

Thank you - and thank you Sysnative for providing this service!

Step 1 completed - attached SFCFix.txt
Step 2 completed - Result of: SFC /scannow: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Do I try to patch again - or what is the next step?

Hi,

You're welcome. Please run the following DISM command as well and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Here is the result:

PS C:\Windows\system32> DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.17763.3406

Image Version: 10.0.17763.5576

[==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.

Great, please attempt to update again and let me know the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Installation complete.
Unfortunately I cannot restart the server @ this moment - will have to do it outside work hours (08.00-16.00)

Will report back here - if update fails upon restart.

Thanks a bunch Maxstar for your help thus far.
Have a great weekend in the Netherlands - greetings from Denmark :)

Server restarted - no problems applying the cumulative patch.
All good - marking this as solved. (and crossing my fingers for next patch round come may 2024 :)

Glad to hear the update installed sucessfully after the reboot. I expect the next - May - update will also install without any problems...
