System File Checker (SFC)

  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

It seems that you are missing way more than that one file. Follow the instructions below please.

Can this be the reason for very slow startup? During startup, after "starting windows" with logo i only have black screen with the mouse cursor, which stays there about 2min and only after that Windows load. I'm just wondering if it is related or if I should dig some more.

Looks like the replacement succeeded :) You are free to run a new SFC scan and post the CBS.log here for me to review it if you want. And I doubt it's related. Start-up issues are mainly caused by programs, services and drivers starting on boot.

Hi Aura, thanks a lot for your help!
Here is the new CBS log: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_8o9Kwt_pj-TjhnMEF5N0IzVmM/view?usp=sharing

It seems that even the startup time is a bit better now:)

One more question - i can't generate the system health report. Whenever I try, I get the following error:
[TABLE="width: 100%"]
[TR]
[TD="width: 1"] [/TD]
[TD]Error:

[TD]An error occured while attempting to generate the report.

The wait for the report generation tool to finish has timed out.

Any idea?

This log doesn't contain traces of SFC being ran on the system. If you want to submit a new CBS.log, follow the instructions below please.

Also I never encountered that error before since I don't use that utility. I can ask around my colleagues to see if they ever faced that situation however.

Now this is a log I can read, and it's all clean :) Is there anything else you need help with? Why did you want to generate a System Health Report?

Thanks a lot for your help with this!
Well, it's a longer story - last week I left my laptop running over night and found it with a black screen and error message in the morning - my HDD pretended not to be there, so I ran chkdsk, which discovered some bad sectors. After that i noticed that startup is much slower, so i ran sfc, found that corrupted file and i wanted to run the report and see if i can find anything there. It's not working though. I tried some custom data collector set, but it's soooo complex and as i don't understand it too much i don't really know what to look for anyway :-)
Startup is faster now, so I guess I'll just leave it:) But if you have any idea what might be the problem, I'd appreciate it :)

If you have issues with your hard drive, it might be worth checking if it's failing or not. Follow the instructions below please.

JcJ91sx.png
GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);
    info_failing.png

Hmm, for some reason it didn't work:
Test result: completed with read failure

Is there any trick i'm missing?

This isn't a good sign. Go under the Attributes tab after that, do you see any lines in red and/or pink? If so, copy/paste them here please.

Your hard drive is currently failing. There's no way to tell exactly when it'll fail, it can be in years, months, days or even in a few hours. Therefore, you should consider backing up all your data as soon as possible and proceed to buy a new hard drive to replace this one.

Well,i suspected something like that. Thanks a lot for your help again! Amazing support, super quick!
Have a great day!

Btw what exactly tells you it's failing? The "198 Offline_Uncorrectable..."?

These two statistics are crucial when it comes to SMART drive, as soon as their RAW_VALUE starts to increase (over 0), it's a sign that the drive is showing early sign of failure.

And no problem, you're welcome :)
