Hello,
I've been trying to update my windows server 2016 standard (version 1607, OS Build 14393) for about a year with no success. Seems to fail the update and loop back to the current working version. I ran sfc /scannow, but nothing could be repaired. I even ran dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth with no success. I then downloaded the SFCFix tool and I received the following:

SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro.
Start time: 2024-02-12 15:07:06.116
Microsoft Windows Server 10 Build 14393 - amd64
Not using a script file.

SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro has encountered an unhandled exception.
Currently storing 0 datablocks.
Finish time: 2024-02-12 16:02:50.580

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Great, the fix completed succesfully so please let me know the result after running the System File Checker.

Thank you @Maxstar. I ran sfc and "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." I assume you fixed it. Should I be ok to attempt an update now? I've read through a lot of your support given to others and it's awesome what you're doing. I appreciate it.

Great! And yes please attempt to update. I suspect it will fail again due an driver issue, so if it fails attach a new copy of the CBS as well as the following log.

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

I ran Windows update and then it reverted back. Here is the file you requested after I attempted the update.

If the the System File Checker completes as well without any issues, attempt to update again and post the result. If it fails attach the latest CBS logs as well as a copy of the Setupapi.dev.log.

Hi,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.
