Hi- I am new to the forum having been sent here from the Pale Moon site. I am 70 years old and not really very well educated in much beyond the basics. I have only one device, a PC running windows 7.

I have an issue with system restore for ages I never bother with but I cannot do a system restore rhat completes.. I see there is a registry problem and the restore point was destroyed. I have lived with that as i had no other issues. However, I am a bit of a privacy nut and decided to move to Protonmail about a month ago. I use a paid version to make it work with Outlook. They only supported 2010 and higher and i had 2007 (actually I have office but only use outlook and word). So I updated office to 2010. Proton worked with Outlook briefly and then stopped. I was trying to fix that.

I ran everything I could find that came from Microsoft. This included sfc /scannow which showed and error. I went from there even trying to repair things using my Windows DVD. Nothing seemed to work, so I tried running chkdsk /f /r. 5 hours and when I tried Outlook it all worked OK. I ditched my old email and notified everybody and everywhere I should of the email addy change. And then I set out to customize it all. I was playing around in Outlook and the next thing i know, nothing downloads. It barely works and what i have that does is their All Mail folder. I can also work on their site via my browser- Pale Moon 27.9.4.

Before coming here the last thing i tried was to run sfc /scannow in safe mode. I wanted to post it on the Pale Moon forum but it exceeded the maximum character limit. I have run the tool by niemiro:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2018-07-28 01:38:01.365
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

I ran the windows malicious software tool today and it found nothing.

I was headed next to a VPN and then to Linux. I am seriously considering going to Fastmail and getting a refund from Proton. Their support is awful. I do not use social media so I have to work with them vie email. They have no forum. I do not care about encrypted email only that my provider not read my email and use the information to push ads at me or sell it. I am happy to pay to avoid that.

If you want to see my thread re this on the Pale Moon site, here is the addy I need Windows 7 help - Pale Moon forum

I am not very digitally educated. I can handle the basics is about it. I do not mess with my registry ever. I trust the people who sent me here, so I trust whomever tries to help me here as well. I will be patient. Aside from being inconvenienced by this, basically everything else works fine. I am able to download the security only Windows 7 updates from the catalog.

Thanks in advance for any help.

@softwaremaniac

You just made my day week and month.

While I have owned a PC since 1988 (not the same one), I am not at all digitally savvy. So I was overjoyed to be sent here for help and happy to see I may get it. This is actually my first serious issue in all those decades.

Hello again!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I am leaving in about 45 minutes for my bi=weekly poker game in town (1 hr drive). I will do all of the above tomorrow morning and post the results.

Thanks for your help with this.

I hope I did this OK. The exact file names you indicated would appear on my desktop did not. one was created with .txt at the end. I am pretty sure I found what you require and have them below. I have run sfc /scannow a few times before i came here for help when it did not fix the problem. The SFC scan showed this issue. After following your instructions above, the sfc scan ended by reoporting no problems. So I am hoping in addition to following your instructions that they also fixed things.

I have two questions. First, I have restore points and backups using Windows 7. Would anything frpo prior to fixing things restore the problen just fixed? I would like to do a test restore to see if they actually work now. If not, I will buy or download a free program to do the backups.

Second, I believe this issue may have caused problems with installing new software recently. I upgraded Office 2007 ro 2010 and I changed my email to an encrypted provider, ProtoMail. They claim compatibility with several email programs, including Outlook 2010, which paid users can then use by downloading the proton app called The Bridge. So I downloaded this as well. Whiel my old emails worked great, they were not IMAP. For a very bried time things worked OK and then they blew up. Sync is olmaost no existent with them and the inbox mails will not DL. I am wondering if I should do anything to reinstall Office 2010 (from DVD). I think I should at least delete the email account in Outlook, The Bridge app and start over with a new download and a new Protonmail account setup in Outlook.

If the below is not what you need, please let me know and I will do my best to get you what you need.

Hi! You have done excellently! Your SFC issue has indeed been fixed. I would strongly suggest that you do not restore your system as that would restore the corrupt file and we would be back at square one.

Since I am a Windows Update Expert, I would advise you to start a thread in our Windows 7 Forums where the experts may have more knowledge in these Office/email issues than myself.

Do you have any further questions? :)
