Hi,
I use a AMD A8 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Lately my laptop is failing to load graphic driver- It uses dual graphic of AMD Radeon HD 7640G + 7670M. It radomly chooses to load graphic driver and mostly successful after I uninstall driver and reinstall it. But a restart will fail loading again. AMD forum was unable to help and I was following several suggestions from several tech sites. One of the suggested doing a SFC check and it returned with this messsage

I couldn't find any site offering to solve this until I read multiple happy endings at this site. So trying my luck here
Will this solve my graphic card problem too?
Thanks in advance

Once complete, please run SURT again. When it has finished, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Hi zcomputerwhiz,

I did as you have suggested and it seems error has been rectified. I'm attaching both sfcfix.txt and checksur.txt with reply. Thank a ton for your help.

Glad to hear it.

Has the problem with the display driver been resolved as well?

Has the problem with the display driver been resolved as well?

Nope. That still goes on. I have managed a temp work-around by uninstalling AVG internet security. System now runs under windows firewall and defender protection.

Hi,
Laptop is HP pavilion G6 2005AX running on AMD A8 4500 processor and having dual graphic support with AMD Radeon HD 7640G and AMD Radeon HD 7670M. This problem started out of the blue as graphic drivers failing to load on majority of the starts. Device manager shows yellow exclamation mark under the devices. Initially I found that removing all traces of AMD drivers by using amd removal utility and reinstalling drivers helped but any restart would bring me back to same problem. I downloaded latest drivers from AMD website and that also didn't help. AMD helpline suggested I should do a SFC check and that was how I landed up in this forum and it is rectified now. But graphic driver failure to load persists. It gave me hope that when I uninstalled AVG internet security and activated windows defender and firewall, graphic driver loaded on multiple restarts. After a day, failure recurs and I'm stuck again. Any idea what could be the reason?

Hi,

First of all, until you mentioned it, I didnt know that there was an very recent update for BIOS available. I have installed it and graphic card didn't load after restart. I used amd removal tool and reinstalled latest card drivers from scratch and then too there was no success.

Hi,

Yes did that multiple times. This workaround may work without fuss for 1-2 days and then fails.

Are you using sleep/hibernation when the problem occurs, or is this on a cold boot or restart?

This can happen anytime. After a shutdown and start later, a restart or after a BSOD which is a TDR error due to atikmdag.sys file. Nowadays after installing OEM driver, BSOD disappeared. And all of sudden, driver might load at any of the starts too. It has become very unpredictable

That is starting to sound like it might be a hardware problem. Has this laptop ever overheated?

Hi,

Prior to problem start, I cant remember but I'm guessing that it had. This models fan vents are so close to ground and my children plays a lot of games on this. After problem start, yes- lots of times and each time it experienced thermal shut down. If it is hardware problem, which component have gone kaput?. Card or PCIe slot? Is there a way to test it? Why does it load radomly and work without any glitch till a shutdown, maybe hours later?

It's a fairly common problem, in most laptops the GPU is soldered to the motherboard. Heating and cooling cycles cause the GPU and motherboard to expand and contract (and possibly become warped) which stresses the solder joints. Overheating makes this problem worse.

The solder may crack or begin to separate from the motherboard, causing an inconsistent electrical connection, so the problem may be better or worse on a cold boot, warm reboot, or under load depending on how completely the affected connections make contact at different temperatures.

Sometimes it helps to put copper shims between the heatsink and GPU to keep the solder connections in place, but the permanent 'fix' is to either have the solder reflowed or reballed when possible or replace the motherboard.

Has the fan or heatsink on this laptop been cleaned?

Hi,

No I haven't serviced my computer in the 5 years of ownership. I have read in some other forum about cleaning fan and renewing thermal insulation but haven't yet done so. I have bought another laptop and is in the process of transferring softwares and stuff to that. It is a Lenovo Ideapad 110 ACL running AMD A8-7410 with 8GB RAM and 2 GB dual graphic card of ATI. I shall be getting my old one to HP service to get checked out and see whether it will be within budget to replace or service parts.

Very good, thanks for the reply :)

Is there anything else I can assist you with at the moment?
