Greetings Sysnative Gurus,

What a valuable service you provide... !!

I've been attempting to speed up my wife's Acer Aspire One notebook by switching her boot HDD to an SSD. I used "Apricorn Acer Drive Upgrade Kit". to clone the image.

In summary, the cloning process kicked off a downhill spiral:

  • problems in the image transfer to the SSD
  • a successful Windows Backup to an external HDD
  • problems installing a CD drive & reverting to a recent restore point
  • then a succesful installation of a second CD drive
  • then in an attempt to build a system repair disk and save a system image, failed with VSS & SPP errors and "possible transient" errors.
  • then a degradation of the boot HDD to the point where it couldn't find the Boot Manager that was there
  • then by invoking Acer's reserved partion, and backing out of it, Windows successfully booted
  • then a series of Windows updates interrupted things. For one update, it took several tries before installing successfully. I was hoping that might fix things; but no go.
  • I decided to run SFC. Several errors were detected; but it left two unfixed (CBS log said were corrupted - along with the backup).

Attached is the CBS log. And here is the SFCFix.text content:

Hi dayoldy :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Sadly I don't have a Windows SP1 x86 .iso at work, so I'll put together a fix once I get home tonight.

Alright, follow the instructions below please.

  • Download the attached SFCFix.zip and move the archive to your Desktop;
    Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix.zip, do not rename it.
  • Save any work you have open, and close every programs;
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it;
    mMabJGT.gif

  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply;
SFCFix.zip

Hi Aura,
I did as you instructed.
Unfortunately I received a message that the zip file is corrupted.
I repeated the download and did it again.
I got the same message. So I need your help please.
Thank you.

Where do you get that corrupt message? When you download it in your web browser? If that so, can you try downloading it in another web browser?

The message shows up in the CMD panel that popped up when I dropped the Zip file on to the SFCfix.exe icon. I believe it showed up in the SFCfix.txt file generated by that action as well.

Can you try downloading SFCFix.zip in another web browser, and see if it works with SFCFix after?

Aura,
It worked! The last few times I downloaded it, I had tried to avoid having to sign in with DropBox and I simply right-clicked on the file to save it to my desktop system. Then I transferred it over to this laptop with a thumb drive. This time I signed into DropBox from the laptop and downloaded it directly. Maybe the corruption was a MIME/Mailcap issue due to the way I saved it - I wouldn't have thought...

Anyway, I admire your persistence and willingness to help. I'm really sorry if I caused you headaches... I'll need to do some practical tests; but I'm really encouraged by what seems to be a fix!

Here are the results you requested...

Good :) Now let's run SFC to see if the replacement is accepted.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Aura,
I did another SFC scan after the fix and I'm still getting a couple of non-fixable errors...

The CBS log says that the following files (and their source files in store) are still corrupted:

  1. acppage.dll.mui
  2. dmutil.dll

Yippeee!
The SFC scan did not find any integrity violations.
Around that old laptop there shines an aurora, Aura!
Thank you.
Now I just want to see if building a system image will work... a failure at that is what prompted all of this.

Aura,
Everything works! System image... Repair disk... Picture me as this mega happy dude who would not have had a prayer. I woulda had to migrate to Puppy Linux or Android OS. Thanx so much!
