Hi There,

I sent a message to one of your helpers on another forum, and he asked me to post here instead.

My computer constantly hangs, everything freezes/becomes unresponsive with the cursor stuck on loading, then everything eventually works at once, this happens over and over.

I've already run multiple SFC scans, and it finds one corrupt DLL, but can't repair it, because the store copy is also corrupt apparently (See attached CBS log). I've also tried Dism to restore health, and even to repair components before doing another SFC scan, and it still comes up with the same DLL error.

I'm also having major issues with my video card driver too. Whether or not these are linked, I'm not sure. If there's more info you need than what I give, I'd be glad to supply it.

The video card driver, whenever I try to update to a newer one, failed. It then screwed with the current driver installed, and under Device Manager, my video card now shows up as an unknown device. I can uninstall it via device manager and scan for new hardware, but all it does is shows up as a basic display adapter. I'm stuck here now, as I can't find a way to install drivers, and even GeForce Experience install fails. I've attached images of these fails below. (Side note: The issue with the drivers has been ongoing, along with the hanging/freezing, etc. Somehow I got the driver to update last time, I just don't know what I did, sorry.)

Driver Failed Install: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

GeForce Failed Install: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

PC Specs (showing Nvidia Basic Display Adapter instead of Gigabyte GTX 770): Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

As you can see, it's not even showing my video card at the moment. I have a Gigabyte Windforce OC GTX770 2GB.

Any help fixing any of this would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I almost went out to replace computer parts being sure it was a hardware issue.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Enable Windows Firewall and Windows Firewall service and try Dism command again.

Please power off the computer, restarted computer then update by following steps:
  1. Download driver: GIGABYTE official website or NVIDIA official website.
  2. Uninstall the old version driver: Control Panel > Program > Uninstall program.
  3. Restart computer.
  4. Install the new driver by the default setting.
  5. Install completed, restart your computer and driver update completed.

You can use Automatic Driver Updates tool to find correct driver.

Firewall was never/has never been disabled. My problem has nothing to do with firewall issues.

If you actually looked at my post properly, you can see I've already tried downloading the drivers from their website. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing drivers, and they won't install. That's the whole point of that part of my post.

Getting advice from an actual expert on this forum would be nice thanks.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Alright, now let's run a new SFC scan to see if the replacement was accepted.

EndqYRa.png
System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Are you sure? Your CBS.log is clean. It returned no corrupt files at all.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

As it's currently Christmas Day where I live Aura, I may be a little slow with my replies for a while.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

CMD said there were corrupt files found but unable to be repaired after it completed. I closed CMD, so I'll re-open and re-run the scan if you'd like me to screenshot it and send it to you?

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Yes please do that.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

While it's running, I'll also add that I'm still having the hanging issue. Should I also try to re-install the video driver? Or is that an unrelated issue?

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Depends what you mean by "hanging". Usually when a computer hangs, the first thing I do is check the hard drive to make sure it's not failing. However, driver and hanging issues aren't really Windows Update-related if you ask me :P

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Here's the screenshot showing I'm still getting the unable to repair corrupt files error: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

And here's the new cbs.zip file: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=F4723D693420AA93!1923&authkey=!AHWJKbpVqrpNX2s&ithint=file,zip

I was in the process of testing that when I first heard from one of the other helpers. I had installed windows on another SSD, was in the process of running it to see if it was fine when I noticed I had a reply, so I plugged the old OS SSD back in to reply. I'll go back and test the other SSD again when I get home later, to make sure it isn't the drive. Was my first thought, but didn't want to spend the money on a new drive without being sure that was the problem. I already have 3 SSD's and two HDD's in my PC, didn't want more (in the case where it isn't the drive).

I didn't think so - my original message was to one of your helpers on another site, he helped someone else with the same issues I'm having (hanging, video driver issues, etc.), and he directed me to post here, as he couldn't help me through messages on another website.

FYI, by hanging, I mean the mouse and keyboard are responsive, but windows itself isn't. My cursor gets stuck on the loading icon, programs freeze, nothing will launch, and then everything happens at once.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

I still don't see anything in your CBS.log. Let's see if we can get more information out of DISM.

EndqYRa.png
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption
Follow the instructions below to run a DISM operation on your system.
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time;
  • Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\DISM folder and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file on your Desktop, then right-click on it, go to Send to... and select Compressed .zip archive;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the DISM scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

I'm heading out now Aura, I'll be back in ~5 hours if you're still on then. Thought I'd let you know so you didn't sit here waiting for me to reply. Whatever advice you leave me, I'll do it when I get home.

Thanks for your help so far.

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Hi Aura,

Just letting you know, I finally figured out the issue with the hanging/failed install of drivers, etc. I wondered why, no matter which hard drive I installed windows on, I had the same issue of hanging and corrupt files, etc.

My case is a Corsair Obsidian 800D. Majority of its 3.5" bays are hot swappable. It seems the board at the back of the bays that you connect the SATA cables to is dying, because when I plugged it in using one of the two regular bays, it's running fine. I do still have one single corrupt file that's irreparable, so I'll try running Dism again and see if that fixes it, and if not, I'll get your help with that one last file and everything should be good!

Re: SFC & DISM Can't Repair Corrupt DLL, PC Hanging & Drivers Unable to Update

Thanks for letting me know :) SFC doesn't seems to return what file is corrupt in the CBS.log, so we'll run DISM to get a CheckSUR log output and see which files we need to address.
