[SOLVED] SFC Corruptions

Hello Administrator Contributor Go To Power,

I've been researching the exact same topic. I have 100 and 200 or even more desktop.ini files that are showing as missing with SFC. My system is a little sporadic right now, but I can't put my finger on any specific issue that is running poorly or broken. I hate to hijack anyone's thread, but is there anyway I can ask you for similar help. Please advise. Thank you. In the meantime, I think I'll take a look at SFCFix.exe. I will not use any of the files you put together for this member.

I have moved your post to a new thread just to keep everything in the same place.

When you run SFCFix just double click on it and the tool should go through the repair stages, once complete please upload the log.

Here is the log. It states I only had 48 corruptions, but it appeared many more were listed by SFC. Maybe there were more duplicates than I thought. I don't know if SFCFix found my Windows media when it asked for it. Should I run it again starting with the media in the DVD drive? I am totally amazed that missing desktop.ini files can throw off SFC. Thanks for your offer of assistance with this issue.

Hi Richard,

As you can see here these are all Desktop.ini files, my guess would of been that you may have ran a tool to clear out unused temp files, free up disk space etc. This is rather common for these tools to target these files. But I would recommend in the future if you run one of these tools you make it so it leaves everything inside C:\Windows alone.

Now I was able to source replacements for most of these files, there are just a couple left to repair afterwards.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
    button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:

    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

You are correct that I ran a cleaner program. The one that probably did the damage was from probably from Absolute Uninstaller Pro from Innovative Solutions. I am very hesitant to run any type of cleaner, but it listed almost 10GB of cleaned space and I was do to perform a new backup so I did it to reduce the space requirements for the backup. I can't say that with 100% being sure because I don't know how long the desktop.ini files were missing. I'm amazed that any of the desktop.ini files are tracked or required by SFC. Although they are system files, I always consider desktop.ini files to be junk files.

Hey Go The Power,

With only 7 desktop.ini files remaining to be restore, I went to my win 7 DVD and copied the files out of the install.wim file. I just ran a "SFC /scannow" and it came up clean. Thanks for your help and especially for assistance with SFCFix.exe. That got me on the road to recovery and the rest was easy from there. I appreciate your help.
