Looking for a little help here. SFC cannot repair the corrupt files it finds, however DISM (c:\dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth) completes with no errors. I ran SFCFix.exe and it reports that there are 35 corrupt files that it cannot repair. I have attached a copy of my SFCFix.txt and a zipped CBS.LOG file for your consideration... If anyone can tell me how to repair this mess I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

Hello and welcome

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC /SCANNOW
  1. Right click on the

  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.
Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt
  1. Right click on the

    button
  2. Click on Run => Inside the run box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  3. Press Enter
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt, please rename this file to CBS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.txt For example "CBS_Go The Power_1803.txt"
  5. Please upload CBS_{Username}_{Date}.txt to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Go The Power,

Thanks for your time! I wanted to let you know that I was able to figure out the magic of the SFCFix.exe and sfcfix.zip combo by downloading and looking at a few others that have been posted on here.

So......I went to my other machine that is running the same identical OS and, wrote a batch file using the error report as a guide to copy the un-corrupted files to my flash drive. I then zipped them into my own sfcfix.zip file using the same file structure as the originals to avoid spoiling the script. I then ran my solution and it happily replaced every single file preserving all of the appropriate file permissions etc... Now then since I wanted to confirm I was truly out of the woods I went ahead and re-ran "SFC /scannow". Guess what? Same problem. Long story short, I installed windows 8.1 pro from scratch, installed the zillion windows updates, re-installed my office, and visual studio, and a few other utilities, as well as a couple favorite games. Did I say long story short? I cant even write this in short form! Needless to say this took many hours.

So.... I have now completed a full back-up using Acronis 2015 and stored on my NAS, as well as cloning the drive for storage. I think I'm covered for next time. (I didn't even mention the part about the Microsoft tech that wanted me to re-install Windows 7, then Windows 8, then Windows 8 pro, then free upgrade to windows 8.1 pro!!!!! - I purchased a new copy of Windows 8.1 pro for this exercise instead of fighting with them about the OEM license.)

Best regards, and thanks again.

Just wanted to post one more thing. I decided to check my brand new freshly installed Windows 8.1 pro by using SFC and DISM. Guess what? Dism found and fixed corruptions, and SFC found and could NOT repair all of the file corruptions. Keep in mind this installation is only 2 days old! SFC could not repair the following two files;

Successfully copied file C:\Users\Greg\AppData\Local\niemiro\Archive\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-u..ed-telemetry-client_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17747_none_90df8130dac08ee0\telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json to C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-u..ed-telemetry-client_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17747_none_90df8130dac08ee0\telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json.

Fortunately I was able to find the proper version of these files and then use SFCFix.exe to repair my problem. WHEW!! Kudos to whomever wrote this utility. SFC and DISM both are now completely clean, so I went ahead and made more back-ups....

Regards!

Hi! Just wondering if a system repair could have fixed your issue???
Thanks!!

I don't see how since the two files that were corrupt were not on the original installation media. I can only assume they are part of the many hundreds of updates I installed after the clean system install.

OK thanks for that. These issues can be prevented in the future with a back up image of your OS. Just saying?? Beats installing back to factory.
I'm glad you got your issue solved. I'm sure your feed back will help others.

Clad to hear you solved the issue eventually. You did a very good job to work out one of the parameters for SFCFix :) One of our admins here made this tool https://www.sysnative.com/forums/members/niemiro.html

Hi donetao,

We spoke about this a few days ago, system repair is only useful when it is for base OS files :)
