Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see if we can get you fixed up. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please
.

Excellent. Can you run SFC again and then provide the CBS Log?

Step#1 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this and choose send to...compressed (zipped) folder and then attach to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Yes the corruption is now fixed. If you are having issues booting your machine it may be related to something else. Give me some more information and I can refer you to the correct forum for assistance. Please answer the questions below.

1. When did the issue start where you couldn't boot up normally? Did you do anything right before this happened?
2. Is that the only symptoms you are having?
3. Have you tried any troubleshooting steps? If so what were they?

Thank you.

Well, after I saw that sfc said everything was fixed, I went into msconfig and disabled safe mode and restarted. Upon loading normally and getting to the desktop, the computer froze on me again. I restarted and went to system recovery from boot and tried to do the "bcd /edit {~~~} safemod..." but it gave me the message "There are no matching objects or the store is empty". So now I can't load into safe mode, so I figure it'll be easier to simply wipe and reinstall Windows 8, but I have a few questions...
How do I get the product key from the current corrupt installation so that I can validate the new install?
All I have is a Windows 8.1 install disk, but I am unsure as to which version of Windows 8 is on the computer, and I am unsure how to check that and determine if I have the right version on the flash drive...

For clarification, I used "bcdedit /enum" and it gave me the message.
I know there are programs available to look at your product key, but the only way I could get to the desktop was via safemode and that seems unavailable now...

If you feel you should reinstall windows 8 that's your choice. Sorry it has come to that. I can help you get the information you need. Have you booted into the advanced options yet as show below? It wasn't clear from your explanation. Please let me know.

InitialScreen.JPG

Yes, I've booted into the advanced options both via F11 when booting and booting from a Win8.1 usb and selecting repair.
I am:
>Unable to "Refresh your PC"
>Unable to "Reset your PC"
>No system restore points found
>"Check for errors" says unable to repair
>In command prompt bcdedit \enum returns the error message

HP Minimized Image Recovery seems to work

Thanks for the info. Can you post the following log?

C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

Also, is your machine an OEM machine? Did Windows 8.1 come pre-installed on this computer from HP or did you buy a retail version? Once I get this info I can let you know.

The directory C:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt doesn't exist...
It is my roommate's computer and I am pretty sure it came preinstalled with windows 8 and they updated to 8.1

Let's get some logs.

FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your USB drive from a working computer. You need the 64-bit version.
2. Boot your sick computer to Advanced Options....Command-Prompt.
3. Plug in the USB drive into your sick computer.
4. In the command window type the word notepad and press Enter.
5. Notepad opens. Under the File menu select Open.
6. Select "Computer" and find out what your USB drive letter is and then close notepad.
7. In the command window type e:\frst64 and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your USB drive that you identified in step#6.
8. The tool will start to run.
9. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
10. Press Scan button.
11. It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the USB drive. Please plug in the USB drive into your clean computer and copy and paste the contents of it into your reply.
