I have spent a significant amount of time on this running SURT, SFC, and DISM scanhealth however a few errors remain. I have had a few failed updates but some were installed OK. Hopefully this is an easy fix. I worked with this forum on the same machine some time ago and successfully resolved everything. Some of the files involved seem to be from AVG anti-virus.

Tried to update with the updates offered in Win Update but one I downloaded the file kb4474419 and tried to install it but the installer said it was not applicable to my machine. On looking at the error codes I see it has to do with the SHA encryption in that MS has gone from SHA-1 to SHA-2 so there is some update/download which must be installed prior to the HSA-2 updates being installed. Anyway as I mentioned before I was seeing mention of "Winning" files apparently from AVG installations because before I was getting the "Cannot access a file" issue. I am not seeing that AFAIK right now. Only one update of the 4-5 offered successfully installed. Latest CBS.log attached.

The AVG stuff is benign and can be ignored.

Please try to install the following:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._d3de52d6987f7c8bdc2c015dca69eac96047c76e.msu

Afterwards, do this:

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

Thanks for your considered reply! The file link you sent was for a 64 bit install so I went to the source and installed the x86 version. Installed ok. Did a windows update; all seemed to go well. Then did the windows update fix with the teaking.com tool. Seemed to go ok. Then I did the sfc /scannow and still have corrupt files reported that cannot be fixed. Tried another win update and got report that no more updates are available. So I guess that leaves the SFC problem. I also ran the FRST.exe program and got the text files results mentioning the 0x800f0805: error invalid package in the CBS log ;attached.

Thanks.

Like I said, benign AVG remnants:

These errors I am also getting. So are you saying that I can never get SFC to run without errors- cannot fix etc.? What about deleting AVG completely, or, since I have a complete backup of several months ago just do that? That would return me to a prior version of High Sierra, but I probably could reinstall the latest version.

Yes, these are completely benign and cause no issues. AVG removal won't help you here. Simply don't worry. Those don't cause issues of any kind with anything. They can be forcibly removed, but I really don't see the point.

I appreciate that in themselves they are benign however the SFC scan is a crucial means of establishing whether system files are out of order. I really don't know a better way, so for me having a clean SFC is pretty important. I have spent many hours working with SFC problems to have a smooth running machine. So, If you have the grace, lets forcibly remove the errors.

Please do the following:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Yes. Thanks.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 32-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I don't see any commands to paste into the command prompt except sfc /scannow, so I will do that
