Hi guys, I'm having an issue and found a similar thread in here which I tried to use to be able to troubleshoot this but I hit a barrier when I couldn't read the COMPONENTS file.

SFC scans/Dism do nothing to fix the issue. Automatic Windows Updates or manually trying to install update results in failures.

CBS file can be found here as well as the COMPONENTS file.

Let me know if you need anything else from me.

Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named SleepyDude. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hi Guicane,

Let's see if we can take care of that problem... please execute the following:

Press
windows8_key.png
+ X and click Open Command Prompt (Admin)
type:
Code:
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After this please upload the new CBS.log like you did before.

Hi,

We need to do some checking...

SFCFix Script
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCScript.txt, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    8RAhYFg.gif
    SFCScript.txt
  • Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

Hi,

We need to search the Registry for the update, please execute the following:

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
(Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64)
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    net start trustedinstaller
  • if the command above works as expected it will say in the end "The Windows Modules Installer service was started successfully."
  • close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the Tool opens for the first time you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST_SearchRegistry.png
  • On the Search box (1) type or Copy & Paste the following text:
    kb4038792
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (Search.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your post.

Re: Windows Update Issue - Error Code 0x800F0831

Hi,

Thanks for the log but it didn't catch everything, we need to do it differently (no need to re-download the files). Please try this:

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
(Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64)
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"
  • wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully"

Hi,

Thank you. This most likely will fail but we have to try before doing a manual uninstall...

Press
windows8_key.png
+ X and click Open Command Prompt (Admin)
type or Copy & Paste the command:
Code:
wusa /uninstall /KB:4038792

Let me know the result.

Re: Windows Update Issue - Error Code 0x800F0831

Hi,

Lets try a fix...

Step 1 - Backup the Registry
  • Please download RegBak (by AceLogix Software) and save it to the Desktop
  • Right-click on the file regbak.zip then select Extract all... to extract the files to the Desktop a new folder called regback will be created
  • open the folder regbak and Run regbak64 by double clicking the file, if it doesn't work because you have a 32-bit Windows, Run regbak instead
  • don't change any options and click Next, accept the default Settings and click Start. RegBak will backup all of your Windows Registry hives.

Step 2 - SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...

That didn't work so I went to catalog and downloaded the 2012 R2 version but got the same result.
