Hi,

I've had a problem with this server for a while where the monthly quality updates don't get applied, other patches are going on with no problem, our servers are patched via WSUS.

So currently the 2 pending installation are
2017-09 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4038793)
2018-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4056895)

I've run sfc /scannow which reported no issues
yesterday dism reported nothing so i performed an update and restart, the patched failed to install

So i've just run sfc again, no issues
dism reported
"The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was
repaired.
The operation completed successfully."

sfcfix found no issues either

I have downloaded the patch files directly from the download center and tried to install them in release order

KB4038793 - fails to install in about 30secs and i get EventID 20 : "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0831: Security Update for Windows (KB4038793)."
KB4056895 - takes 9 minutes before failing with the same error : "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0831: Security Update for Windows (KB4056895)."

Not sure if i'm following the CBS log correctly but it looks like store corruption is pciked up when trying to install the packages, something to do with KB4022717? - 2017-06 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4022717)
I've checked install patches and it isn't listed as being installed but it's not being offered up when checking for updates, WSUS thinks it's not applicable so i've looked at the seqence of these monthly patches and it looks like the June one has been classed as superceded but Sep isn't and we've ended up with a dependency issue.

2017-10 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4041687) Installed
2017-11 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4048961) Installed
2017-12 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4054522) Installed
2018-01 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB4056898) Installed


So do i try to install KB4022717 then KB4038793 & KB4056895 or do i need to uninstall the following patches and the try rolling forward in sequence?

SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCFIX.ZIP, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    sfpcJCen14An3ndjNGCI7mByhjHJud.png
    SFCFIX.zip
  • Drag the file SFCFIX.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

Sorry for the delay in replying.
So when i tried installing the updates again via WU or directly running them they failed again.
I did a restart and install updates which also didn't work, other offered updates have been installed.
So i am left with KB4038793 & KB4056895 still being offered.

New copy of CBS log folder : Dropbox - CBS3.zip

No problem. We probably have to remove the update KB4022717 manually...

Check the list of installed updates for KB4022717 and Uninstall it. If the update isn't on the list execute the following steps to generate a log file


Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
    (Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64)
  • open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • type the command:
    dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"
  • wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully"
  • close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
    and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
    (When the Tool opens for the first time you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)

  • On the Search box (1) type or Copy & Paste the following text:
    KB4022717
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

I changed my instructions after post so I need to confirm if you use the command line and type:
dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"

Just before running FRST64?

Sorry, no i hadn't spotted that difference, i'd followed the instructions in the email i recieved.

I've now run dism and then rerun frst64 so the results are attached.

  • Download the file View attachment FixList.txt and save it to the Desktop as fixlist.txt
    (It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work!)
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.gif
    and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
    FRST_Fix.png
  • Press the Fix button just once and Wait. After the fix the system needs to restart if the tool does not request it please Restart the computer.
  • The tool will make a log (Fixlog.txt) on the same location as FRST/FRST64 please post it in your next reply.

Hi,

The patch has now successfully applied but when i got to then check for updates via our WSUS server i get error code 80244007
I can check online for updates and and just get offred the 2 previews of quality rollups (KB4057401 & KB4057272)
