Hi there,

I was tasked with updating a Windows server 2008 R2 SP1 server that was a year or so out of date. All was going well until I had the last six months or so updates left, now ANY update fails. The updates appear to install, but when restarting they fail and the server reverts back to previous state.

I have used the readiness tool and found 2 errors (both the same) - CSI Catalog Expired 0x800B0101 (2 certificates out of date)

Also tried installing KB2749655 but get the message 'the update isnt applicable to this computer' pretty sure I have download the x64 version.

I have run SFC and SFCfix (no errors found)

CBS log files attached - https://we.tl/gi7tZEsBXF

Am at a loss of what to do next really - going round and round in circles!

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

Is one of the updates that need installed KB4040685 ? Or is this one already installed?

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

OK, please do the following.
1. Reboot when able.
2. After rebooting, download and attempt to install ONLY KB4040685 by using the downloaded copy.
3. If it fails, please zip/attach your c:\windows\logs\cbs folder.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

KB4040685 installed fine - I did try another KB after this update was installed, and restart performed, but got stuck on 32% again.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

OK, please let me know which KB number you attempted to install that failed.

Also, please zip up and upload your c:\windows\logs\cbs folder. Thank you.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

KB3110329 installed, on restart failed at 32% and reverts back to original state - same thing happens with other updates, including October 2017 Security Rollup

CBS logs here - Download CBS.rar

Thank you. That was helpful. Please also zip/attach the following file.

C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

OK, here's what we need to do next.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Select the Options....Enable Boot Logging option. A Enable Boot Logging dialog will come up. Just click OK.
3. Create a folder on your desktop named BootLog.
4. Attempt to install KB3110329 just like you have in the past. Let the server reboot and revert just like it has in the past.
5. After the server has rebooted and come back up to the desktop, open Process Monitor again. A message box will come up telling you that a log of boot-time activity was created and ask if you wish to save it. Click Yes and save to the BootLog folder on your desktop.
6. This may take some time as it converts the boot-time data. Allow it to finish.
7. Zip up the entire BootLog folder on your desktop and upload to SendSpace and provide a link for me to download.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

Unfortunately the boot files were corrupted. When able, please repeat the steps but maybe make sure Process Monitor is closed before zipping up the files. That may make a difference.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

Excellent, that worked. Please also zip up your entire c:\windows\logs\cbs folder and upload for me to review. This should give me what I need.

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 Sp1 Updates Failing

Looks like you have a ton of snapshots (maybe this is a backup server or something) and your system (TrustedInstaller specifically) is simply timing out before it has time to install the update. Likely waiting on the snapshots to be verified.

Code:
2017-11-02 22:22:16, Info CBS Startup: Changing logon timeout to a sliding window timeout: 900000
2017-11-02 22:37:17, Info CBS Startup: Timed out waiting for startup processing to complete

Let's increase the timeout to 3 hours and see if it's successful. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please
