Hello -

Server 2019 - CU's fail to install ("update is not applicable to your system", even though they are applicable).

Last successful CU install was last year. Tried SFC, various DISM commands, etc.

Updates fail with references to "0x8000FFFF" in WU log and CBS log.

DISM /online /get-packages shows various packages in "uninstall pending" and "install pending" states. When I try to "remove-package" on those, I get the "0x8000FFFF" error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply.

Step 2. Open an elevated command prompt, run the following command and attach Packages.txt to your next post.
Code:
DISM /online /get-packages /format:table > "%UserProfile%\desktop\Packages.txt"

Hello - I had uploaded a copy of the entire CBS folder and attached to the first post. Did you not get it or do you need another one? DISM output is attached.

Just a question? Have you deleted previous log files, the latest CBS log did not provide any useful information?

Yes - just the rollover logs were removed originally, as they were much too large to zip and attach (over 80GB). I just zipped up a new set and tried uploading (64MB) but receive an error that the upload is too large.

Hi,

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link

  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hello,

Unfortunately I cannot run that tool on this systems. If you read the comments on the page you linked, you’ll see nothing but reports of viruses and malware.

I submitted the executable to Virus Total and their scan came back confirming that the program contains malware and cannot be trusted.

Hi,

FRST is safe to use and does not contain malware. The two engines who flagged FRST as a threat are false positives.
