Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2019 server where I can't install any cumulutive updates whatsoever, failing with error code 0x80073712.

Ran sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which found some corruption which was fixed, but it still won't install.
Tried running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup but get the following message each time:

"Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.17763.3406

Image Version: 10.0.17763.3650

[============= 23.8% ]

Error: 32

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

Tried running SFCfix.exe on it's own which found corruption, but doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.

I've attached the CBS and DISM logs to this post.

Thank you
Moh

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
61f7aba7309a1-ComponentsScanner_Icon.png
ComponentsScanner and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click ComponentsScanner.exe and select "Run as administrator", click Yes on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt which appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Once complete, a report will be saved to your desktop called ComponentsScanner.txt.
  • Post the logfile ComponentsScanner.txt as attachment into your next reply.

Step 2. Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hello Maxstar,

Thanks for getting back to me. Please see attached the ZIP file containing the ComponentsScanner.txt file.

Hi,

Please upload also a copy of the COMPONENTS hive. And do you have recent backups of this server / COMPONENTS hive.

Hello,

I have attached the COMPONENTS hive in the ZIP file below. I have monthly backups of the server from the last 2 years and potentially longer but would need to check this. This issue has been ongoing for quite some time and checking the Windows Update history shows the last time it succesfully installed updates was in November 2022.

Thanks,
Moh

Hi,

This doesn't look good at all, this hive is damaged beyond repair. Basically, there are a few options left to resolve this issue.
1. replace the corrupt hive with a backup from November 2022 to see of it's possible to fix the remaining issues.
2. perform an in-place-upgrade with the Server 2019 ISO.

Hello,

I couldn't find a backup old enough to restore the COMPONENTS hive, so I resorted to rebuilding the server which was relatively straight forward.

Thanks for the help,
Moh
