Hi all,

Having issues installing august SSU on server 2016. Tried many DISM options, sfc /scannow etc to no avail. I've seen some good results from other people on this forum. Can anyone help?
There are 2 updates hanging on install pending and when I try to delete them using DISM the result in the following error:
dism /online /remove-package /packagename:package_for_DotNetRollup~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.4480.1
dism /online /remove-package /packagename:package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~14393.4946.1.5
->
An error occurred - Package_for_RollupFix Error: 0x80070490
Error: 1168
Element not found.

Any assistance is welcome.
EDIT: oh yeah whenever this server tries to install any WU, it's also stuck in a bootloop until suddenly powered off during boot - then it boots again normally. This bootloop is rather fast and shows Trusted Modules Installer / Getting Windows ready.
sfc /scannow is clean

Kind regards,
Niko

Hi,

No problem at all, could you please attach the following log file to check the problematic driver and a copy of the COMPONENTS hive.
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.
Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Please try to update Windows, if it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.

Hi Max,

It went into a bootloop again:
1. Boot (Windows logo)
2. Please wait for the TrustedInstaller
3. Gettings Windows ready - Don't turn off your computer
4. Shutting down

This all takes like 30 seconds. The only way to get it to boot normally again is to do a sudden power off while it's processing "Getting Windows ready".

2x CBS logs attached (log rotated)
WU's started around 09:40, reboot around 10:30

This looks good, so hopefully the update can now be installed without issues. If it fails attach a new copy of the CSB log.

Hi Max,

Thanks a lot! All updates installed successfully now.
So it were just some permission issues on driver regkeys in the ComponentStore?

Kind regards,
Nikolai

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear all updates installed succesfully now... (y)

This was not a problem with permissions, but certain values were missing in the CBS hive under the DriverOperations subkey. See post#9 and #13.

I'll mark this thread as solved...
