Inherited a server that apparently hasn't done any updates since 9/22. Exciting. CBS shows a KB missing, but of course, that KB doesn't exist in the MS catalog anymore. So, somewhere between kb5017396 and kb5020439 something failed and isn't getting fixed with as many standard and not so standard fixes. ComponentScanner found "inconsistencies". I've seen a few similar threads so I suspect the problem isn't too hard to pin down, but it's beyond me running Microsoft tools to fix it.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Which I was hoping would solve the Windows Update issue - won't update past Security Update KB5017396

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8E5E0654: Update for Windows (KB5020439).

Windows Update Troubleshooter says there's corruption in the DB but won't fix it.

So, I attempted the steps outlined here - Additional resources for Windows Update - Windows Client

for Reset Windows Update components manually

And it worked! Got the first patch patched in months on this box.

Hopefully I can step through them and get it all up to date now. Thank you so much! Definitely an amazing service you all put in here. Donation sent with <3.

Cheers!
