Hi,

Had a previous thread here where I suspected issues with SFC and DISM were related to a couple of vital services not starting. Both SFC and DSIM were not completing but thanks to BlueRobot for helping me out there, both are now completing ok.

However, I still have the main issue with vital services not starting. On top of this, I can't get into the Windows logs in Event Viewer to have a better look. One of the vital services that is no longer starting is for Veeam Agent for Windows. I've tried to reinstall it (after sorting the SFC / DISM issues) but it still won't start. I've also tried to install the upgrade, it gets to the end where it tries to start the services and then errors out.

The service produces the following error when manually trying to start it 'Error 1064: An exception occurred in the service when handling the control request'.

When I expand any Windows logs in eventvwr MMC crashes..

Would really appreciate any input from anyone who can help.
Thanks.

Hi, thanks for your response, this is now resolved.

I downloaded that and it let me view the logs but wasn't much help because there was so much going on due to the issues.

Server Manager also wouldn't open and I came across this

As a couple of the solutions suggest, what worked for me was copying the machine.config file from
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Config
to
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Config

I checked on a couple of other servers I have and the files were identical in both locations (servers without these issues obviously have the file in both locations, mine was missing in the Framework64 location on the problem server).

Reboot and hey presto, everything working again. I guess that file was somehow damaged when I uninstalled the Jan 2022 cumulative update due to the issues with that update.
Thanks for your help.

Just to add, yes the entire server is backed up by an agentless vm backup software. Veeam is just an additional file level backup I run within the server for an extra backup copy for the main file server volume. Interestingly, the Veeam backups appear to have still taken place each day, despite the one and only Veeam service having not been running for many days, and no scheduled tasks.. not sure how that works.
