Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

tried lots of the fixes from various threads

Most fixes are specifically made for a particular system, running these fixes on another system can cause more (and/or irreparable) problems.

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Reboot the server and run the System File Checker. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
SFC /Scannow

attached

C:\Windows\system32>SFC /Scannow

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

Please attach a (new) copy of the CBS log(s) as well.
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

i could, how far back are we going?

i have an older desktop that i could pop a hard drive in & install Server2016 again, get it up to date & then copy the components folder if you think that would help?

PS i didn't have read access to the components folder, even i am logging in as administrator, had to add read access for my admin login?

i could, how far back are we going?
Please provide a backup before (2022/3/9) March 2022 if available?

Your COMPONENTS hive is badly damaged, only with a backup we could try to rebuild the hive and see what are the remaining issues.

i do have an older C: drive that i copied to an SSD, it's still there, not connected, i could connect it & see how old the Components folder is?

Hi,

Yes, please the check the old HDD to see if we can use that COMPONENTS hive.

it would be easier to install Server Essentials on my old desktop & copy the hive from there - not the same?

Unfortunately that will not work and will not solve the problem but make it more worse, if you have no backups then a complete reinstallation of the server is the only solution.

sorry for the delay...
i am planning a vacation and it is taking priority
i'll be able to look at this again in May

finally ready to wrap my head around this again
i have 3TB of data synced to the cloud, if i rebuild the server, it will have to sync again
trying hard not to do that
is there anything else i can try?

i have another machine i can migrate my installation to
if i do a full-metal back & restore it to another machine, is it possible it will sort itself out?
