Running into a few issues on this 2012 R2 Standard server. I am unable to install most updates, and have been researching for almost 10 hours. I have also tried running the SFCFix.EXE utility, which does not alleviate the issue. SFC /scanhealth does indicate that their are problems that can be fixed, though /restore health returns an error. Please see my DISM and CBS log files attached. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named LiquidTension. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Thanks a lot, any help at all is very appreciated. I look forward to working with you guys.

Hello,

Given the number of corrupt files reported, we need to check for a potential hardware-related issue.

CHKDSK

  • Click the Start button :eightstart:, followed by Command Prompt (Admin).
  • At the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter on your keyboard.

    chkdsk

  • If you are prompted to schedule CHKDSK to run the next time the computer restarts, type y and press Enter on your keyboard.
  • Type Exit and press Enter on your keyboard.
  • Restart your computer. CHKDSK will automatically run.
  • Note: This process can take several hours.
  • Upon completion, download ListChkdskResult and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Right-click ListChkdskResult.exe and click
    AVOiBNU.jpg
    Run as administrator.
  • A file (ListChkdskResult.txt) will open. Copy the contents of the file and paste in your next reply.

After running CHKDSK, please run the built-in Memory Diagnostic.

  • Open Server Manager, click Tools followed by Windows Memory Diagnostic.
  • This will involve a reboot. The server will be down for the duration of the test.
  • After the server comes back up, make a note of the time.
  • Click the Start button :eightstart:, followed by Event Viewer.
  • Under Windows Logs, right-click System and click Save All Events As....
  • Name the file meks System Event Logs and save to your Desktop.
  • Select Display information for these languages, ensure English is selected and click OK.
  • Right-click meks System Event Logs.evtx on your Desktop, click Send to followed by Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Include the .zip file in your next reply, along with a note of the time recorded earlier.

Here is the result of the CHKDSK :

This server is a virtual machine running on a host with many different servers, none of which are showing similar symptoms. I can run the MEMTEST if need be, but I don't believe this to be the problem. Let me know, and thanks again for the help.

Hello,

Given this does not appear to be a hardware-related issue, we are left with a considerable number of corruptions in this specific Windows installation - to put things into context, SFC is reporting over a thousand files as corrupt, which is an abnormally high number.

A repair or fresh install may ultimately be the best/only course of action. Having said that, there may be steps we can take to try and resolve the issue without a repair/fresh install, but there is no guarantee of a successful result.

Please let me know your thoughts on the above, and which route (repair/fresh install vs troubleshooting) you would be interested in taking.

I am willing to try a few things to get this resolved, just let me know. If it comes down to it we'll rebuild this server.

Hello,

You mentioned you have many servers running on the same host machine. Do you have another fully functioning server on this host with the same Operating System version as the one you're currently experiencing an issue with?

I do not. Also- unfortunately since this server is on a hosted environment through a service called Profit Bricks, I don't have visibility of the host OS.
