Server 2008 sp2 - sfc bombs

I have a server 2008 standard (sp2) that is currently functioning as a server but I cannot add roles or features through Server Manager. A while back I started running out of disk space and it turned out to be the winsxs directory that was eating everything. At the time, the server was serving in a critical capacity for the business and in panic, I deleted everything I could from the winsxs directory. This served to allow the server to continue functioning in it's role. I since upgraded servers and was planning on retiring this one when a new role was requested. I decided to use this already setup server and the software company loaded the new application and was 98% done when they needed to configure a couple of features in IIS. The IIS administrative console works when run directly from the IIS directory but we cannot get to the previous screen regarding configuration. I've run SURT which assisted in fixing the ability to download and install updates. However, sfc /scannow bombs at 62%. If I run sfc /verifyonly it completes but the log is huge. Then I came upon sfcfix which completes without error but has been unable to solve my "roles & features" issue. If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would seriously appreciate it. I've attached the sfcfix.txt log.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome! I will be assisting you with your issues.

Please note that this is an extreme corruption and will likely take a long time to fix due to its severity.

I'll post the first set of instructions shortly.

Please also run SURT and SFC Scan and attach CBS.log and CheckSUR.log for me to review.

I thiink I may have accidentally fixed it. Somehow everything lost permission to access anything in the winsxs directory. I took ownership of the directory and then was able to get the system to acknowledge the existence of the files. I haven't had a chance to run sfc yet but will do that in the morning.I thiink I may have accidentally fixed it. Somehow everything lost permission to access anything in the winsxs directory. I took ownership of the directory and then was able to get the system to acknowledge the existence of the files. I haven't had a chance to run sfc yet but will do that in the morning. It was a similar problem with the DTC issue, no one had permission to update it. I took ownership and then allowed NETWORK SERVICE access and everything suddenly came to life with respect to DCOM. I'll review in the morning and let you know. I'm certain that the list of problems is going to be considerable less. Thanks for you help.

Thanks for letting me know.

Apparently my joy was premature. While I can now view "roles and features", I can't add or modify. I'm getting a "toobig" error message. I re-ran SUR tool, sfc and sfcfix and the logs have gotten much smaller. SFC is still bombing at 62%, I did not run it in verifyonly mode. Attached sfcfix log. Below are links to the CBS and CheckSUR logs (too big to attach). I appreciate your help.

CBS.log - Google Drive

CheckSUR.log - Google Drive

Thanks,

Joe

PS- I verified that the items that say "payload missing" are accurate, the files are not there.

Hello, first batch!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

 1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
 2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
 3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
 4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
 5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
 6. SFCFix will now process the script.
 7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
 8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Dropbox - SFCFix.zip

Afterwards, please run SURT and attach CheckSUR.log.
