We have one 2008 R2 server that is failing any update I try to install with an 8000FFFF error. I have been reading forums for the last week or so and I have not been able to get past this issue. I have tried everything and I still can't get anything to work. This is a VM server that is running on a cluster along with 22 other servers that are using a SAN as an iSCSI target. Five of those are also 2008 R2 servers that are running fine, however we are having issues with just this one. It is causing issues because we cannot install VMware Tools on it until the updates are applied, which takes away our mouse control.

I have ran a sfc /scannow and received the following.

sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Following the guidelines I then ran the SFCFix, and it found no errors. Just to make sure I also ran the SURT/DISM Scan hotfix.

I did try running updates one more time after this, and it still failed. I'm not exactly sure what else to check at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

I did as you asked, and tried to install the update you sent over in post #2. It failed again, and I collected the data you asked for.

Please first take ownership of the ComponentBasedServicing key and then execute the following script:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Looks like it has something to do with the Registry?

Registry ====> ERROR: Error accessing the registry.

I guess it would help if I could follow directions. . .

I'm assuming you just wanted me to take ownership of that key as you would a file/folder in Windows? I'm still getting the same issue in the logs about not having access. I ran the application as Administrator.

I had to check the permissions, and the Administrator account did not have full rights. I made the corrections, and the new log is attached.

Thank you. I ran the same update that I was asked to download earlier, and it failed. If you think I should try another I can. Thank you for your help with this. I would have never figured this out.

Logfile2.PML

Yeah, I saw that after I tested. My Ctrl+V didn't paste the correct link. It should be correct now and worked for me.
