We have a 2008 R2 server that is having problems installing updates. The updates install, but after reboot, the system says the updates failed and are being reverted. System reboots again and we're back to where we started.

Ran sfc /scannow (No errors found), am able to install the system update readiness tool, and also ran the sfcfix file (Also no errors found.)

Log file here - Dropbox - CBS.zip. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I see boot manager errors. How much free space is there on the drive and is there a dual boot setup in place? If so, is it configured on two separate HDDs or on multiple partitions of a single disk. Would it be possible to temporarily disconnect the drive that contains the other OS (if applicable)?

The drive was low on space (Which started this journey) because there were pending deletes and pending renames in winsxs\temp that were taking up probably 30 gigs. Through the exercises we've performed so far, the pendingrenamed cleared out and only pendingdeletes remains (14GB.)

Free space is currently at 20GB.

System is not setup as dual boot, only a single drive setup. Here's output from bcdedit /enum if helpful.

It's a domain controller - nothing else loaded, so nothing we can really clean up. Checked for old temp files, logs, etc. Drive is actually only a 60GB drive so we're at about 30% free. I could add more space if you think it will truly help.

No dice. For kicks, I downloaded the patch and manually ran it. Same results. I started a new CBS log file before the install so it wouldn't be huge, hopefully that helps narrow things down.

No AV on the server currently. That was our next step. Took these guys over and things are a bit of a mess.

I just compared this to a few other good systems and all are showing the system reserved as active. No?

Yes, but it can cause issues sometimes. Since this is a Server machine, I would like us to go the safe route and try some easier stuff first.

Please try giving System Reserved Partition 100-200 MB of free space. I see it is currently at 0%. After that has been done, please retry the troublesome update and let me know the result.

Genius! As soon as you mentioned space for the system reserved partition, I remembered this box had AppAssure on it at one time. AA is known for filling up any drive it can find with AA log files (Usually under system volume information, used for tracking disk changes.) Sure enough, that file was present. Deleted it, plenty of space on the partition and the update installed fine!

Thanks for your help, have to remember this one!
