Hi everyone!

I work for an NHS Trust in Birmingham and seem to be having issues with our Windows 7 x86 image, no matter what I have tried so far it refuses to accept any monthly security rollups.

We are currently trying to join all of our machines to the ATP portal in order to upgrade to Windows 10 under our agreement.

so far I have tried the following methods of updating our image:

WSUS
Microsoft Online
Manual MSU install
DISM install using extracted CAB

I've been getting different errors depending on how I do it, I have tried an SFC /Scannow and SFCFix and neither of them show any errors!

So far I have tried it on a VM and a physical machine using the same image, it's a real head scratcher so any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Kris

Hi SoftwareManiac!

Thank you for your quick reply, apologies for delay in mine but I was on annual leave Thursday/Friday.

Please see attached for the CBS file.

Kind regards.

Hi!

Please do the following:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.

Actually see attached for the latest COMPONENTS zip file as the previous one was from the VM I reset back to a snapshot

Thanks.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB3212646-x86.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB3212646-x86.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Note: If you get the message that no packages that require processing were found, use the following command instead:

dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB3212646-x86.cab\Windows6.1-KB3212646-x86.cab

If successful, retry the update that failed and attach CBS.log if it fails again.

Hi SoftwareManiac

I installed the suggested update but unfortunately it fails again when I try to install KB4516065.

Thanks

That worked just fine, I was trying to use a later service stack update. How do you figure these things out?

Thank you, I really appreciate your help!
