Scannow verification stops at 77% complete Win 7 Pro SP1

I am running Win 7 Professional 32-bit (outdated I know, but I like it better than Win 10) and have experienced freezing with increasing frequency. Scannow does not successfully complete, so I searched for “windows 7 system scan verification stops at 77% complete” and found your thread at the url [SOLVED] - SFC stopped at 77%. It seemed to perfectly describe my situation, so I downloaded SFCfix and ran it, twice. Even after inserting my Win 7 DVD, repairs were unsuccessful. I did not try the solution recommended in the above-mentioned thread (using the SFCFixScript.txt file) as that thread warned against doing so. The program recommended that I seek advice from you, so I am. I am providing two log files, the first from when I did not insert my Win 7 DVD and the second from when I did (after hunting and finding it in a closet.) Thank you for any help you are able to provide to me.

Hello and welcome,

I have moved your thread to this forum section where it is more appropriate.

Please copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Cordray – Thank you for your prompt response. No, I do not have that update on my computer. A few years ago, updates initiated in Windows Update began to fail at an increasing rate. I manually updated those that failed until that method, too, became increasingly unsuccessful. My computer’s Windows Update module is nonfunctional at this point – searching for updates produces no results (it never stops processing, or whatever term is appropriate, until I close it); the update history says there have been no updates (although many, many updates were done.) I was unable to figure out how to fix that so didn’t.

PeterJ – Thank you. I am not certain that I have the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log; I do not find it in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, and a search for cbs.log in the Windows folder returns no items. Attached is a screenshot of that folder’s contents; it is possible that I am somehow not seeing it. This may or may not be relevant – in stumbling around the net, I found an MS article (ID 929833, revision 2) on the system file checker tool. It advises doing scannow in safe mode and says the tool will use cached files located in Windows\System32\dllcache to replace corrupted files. I also do not find that compressed folder. (Scannow in safe mode also stopped at 77%.) I can say that, after reading numerous posts in your forums, I know that my level of technical expertise is on the lower end of your many participants (this is no surprise to me), and I apologize in advance for any frustration this may cause.

Is mine a hopeless cause?

PeterJ – Sorry for being so dense. I think the file named CBS is the one you mean; I was thrown off by the lack of “.log” showing anywhere. I was finally able to zip it (after copying it to the desktop and zipping it there; I got the error message “File not found or no read permission” when I tried to zip it from its original location.)

Not at all. We just need to do some steps to fix the issues. Below is the first step.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Attach that file to your next reply.

Great.
Run the command sfc /scannow in an elevated commandprompt again and report the result.
On completion copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach and the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

PeterJ – When I turned on my computer this morning, I got the message, “Checking file system on C:” with the further message “One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.” I assume that this was to be expected. Check disk proceeded, taking 80 minutes, apparently successfully. The final report before the computer restarted noted that it was correcting errors in the volume Bitmap and then that it had made corrections to the file system. I have a photo if it is needed.

I ran sfc /scannow as you directed, and it again stopped at 77%, after 10 minutes of processing. Attached is the zipped CBS log file. Thank you again for your assistance.

Make sure to have a back up of all your important data, if not already done.

Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop.
Rightclick

ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator. Notepad will open the file ListChkdskResult.txt on completion. (The file ListChkdskResult.txt can be found on your desktop.)
Attach that file to your next reply.

PeterJ – All of my data files have been saved on multiple portable hard drives, but I do have a question: will/may the various software applications I have on my computer be affected by this recovery/restoration process and need to be reloaded/replaced? Just curious.

No. We will attempt to fix the Windows issues only.

Restart the machine.
Run the command sfc /scannow in an elevated commandprompt again and report the result.
On completion copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach and the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

PeterJ – Re step 1, confirming that you want text of SFCFix.txt copied into message rather than file itself attached as was done before; the text is several pages long in a MSWord document. Thank you.

Do not use MS Word or similar programs. They can modify the original log file.
Attach the resulting SFCFix.txt as attachment.

PeterJ – Thank you. Scannow stopped at 77% complete again. However, I can say that the work thus far has produced very visible improvements – start-up is much quicker, and there has been only one freeze in the past two days, vs one or two each hour before I first posted.

The latest log SFCFix.txt shows you used the attachment in message #6 again instead of the attachment in message #14.
Please perform both steps in message #14 again using the attachment in message #14.

Please accept my apology; I did use the wrong one.
No problem, it can happen.
