have tried the basic stuff—manual install, troubleshooting former WSUS deployment and related GPOs, renaming SoftwareDistribution folder, running SFC, SURT, etc.

CBS folder here and SFCFix log attached.

:banghead:

TIA!

Hello and welcome to Sysnative! Let's start with the following so I can gather more info.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to the hive so it's not in the public form.

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are One Drive or SendSpace and then just PM me your link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

took the liberty of using the portable version and backing up only the SOFTWARE hive.

PM sent with download link.

Thanks!

value manually deleted. to be sure, the actual value had ".Trigger_1" appended to the end and its data was "6.1.7600.21416@@2".

here's a screenshot of the entire subkey after deletion:

attempted SP1 (KB976932) install via Windows Update afterward and it failed with the same error. not for nothing it consistently fails at the same status bar point. :(
